Social Security clogged with disability claims
Wednesday, April 1, 2009

By MATT SEDENSKY
TAMPA, Fla. (AP) -- For all the talk of an impending crisis in Social Security, one already exists: The system is clogged with hundreds of thousands of disputed disability claims, a backlog so big that some people wait years for a hearing.

Default SSD Clogged

I read that article on my Yahoo News and talk about depressing as I have been waiting for a hearing DATE since Aug. 27, 2008. My lawyer even sent all my medical information directly to the judge in Richmond to see whether he would approve it or at least get a hearing date. That was two months ago and no news. That article is very scary to me as I am about to loose my insurance and so I am stressed all of the time. However I hope that congressman who wants to to set a time table for hearings and one set for the results of those hearings.
Glad someone else saw it besides me
Let's keep our fingers crossed, if not for those of us who have already been suffering, but to help the suffering of others.

I have been waiting since Oct 06 for a hearing.....

I hear it all depends on where you live and how many judges cover your state for disability hearings.... as to how fast or slow things move....

At this rate... many people die or give up in one way or another before they ever get a hearing... at least where I live.

Default waiting, waiting, waiting

Mee too..have been waiting for my hearing since Nov '06...the hearing is now set for May 13th (hate that number ) and the Judge is in Illinois...and I agreed to a video hearing, so they wouldn't delay me even longer. So, pray for me!

Count me in as well. I have also been waiting since the Fall of '06. My hearing date is June 1st. Just Drea, mine will also be a VTC and also from Chicago. I know Indianapolis maybe even Indiana was so backlogged that they sent many cases to Illinois. Let us know how it goes because mine will be shortly thereafter. I wish you much luck!

Default Hearing backlog

The average wait is three years from first application to hearing. 18 to 24 months from 'request a hearing' to hearing date. Sounds like you all are right on schedule. I requested in Sept '06 and was approved at hearing March 20, 09. Now I have to wait 4 to 5 months for the first check.

The new hearing officers (judges) are in the pipeline but will take time to get set up and in the schedule.

Just reading this forum, it seems like SS is on a run of granting approvals.....I hope that all of you get your hearings soon. I know how tough the wait can be........
