Help Hip pain associated with back issues?

Good morning!

I have been a little concerned lately. I have been long since diagnosed with DDD, congenital spinal stenosis lumbar, 2 torn lumbar discs, and about 5 protrusions lumbar and cervical. The problem ive been having lately is that my hips have been causing me to be in so much pain I literally cannot walk. The hip socket (think of an old school Barbie) hurts when my hip is rotated in any direction. So walking, sitting, standing, anything really is just unbearable. The other day I popped a squat in the middle of my dining room because I couldnt make it to a chair.

I have not been diagnosed with hip problems as of yet although I was born with bilateral dislocation of both hips *not due to a rough labor*....I was wondering if anyone else with spine disorders has experienced and related hip pain or if it may be another problem all together. I have mentioned this to my doc several times and every time the only dx I get is "hip pain"....no kidding....anyhow any advice or personal experiences would be welcomed!

Dr won't rx xray or MRI for it??
How long ago was the most recent MRI?
Maybe something new is happening.

Dr does know of the "bilateral dislocation of both hips" as am infant?

If Dr is not responding to your questions/concerns , maybe time for a new one.

The problem is ive been bouncing from doctor to doctor for the past 3 years or so. The first reason being my insurance. Medicaid since I cant work anymore. The second reason: every doc I see turns me away after 3-5 visits when their tx's dont cure me. All of my current docs are new to me as of this year. I did explain to him about the dislocation but he seemed to brush it off as some kind of radiating pain from my back....ive never had this much pain let alone in my hips my pain is usually centered in my L5-S1 not my hips. Although, they have caused me some pain over the years.

Most recent MRI was Jan 2010 and when I saw the doc yesterday and mentioned a new MRI he didnt jump on it and didnt send me for one. In the mean time I have had another baby....between my 1st and 2nd kids I added the two torn discs to my list of dx's so I have no idea how much damage my 3rd child may have caused. I have very rough pregnancies.

Im having a hard time finding a good doctor i guess....Im tired of being turned away and sent to doc after doc.

What is the time frame between the newest baby and the newest hip pain?
maybe that is something to look into.

everything gets lax during pregnancy/birth maybe something got out of whack from having the baby.

but it seems like a simple x ray to just give a quick check on the hips shouldn't be a big thing....cost/ins wise I can understand not rxing MRI since it was not that long ago.

And dr didn't even mention some PT or therapy of any kind ?

Osteopaths/DO?
Or, I don't know if you've considered expert chiropractic...to just check?
There are good ones out there , you just have to find the really good ones. It's another option, to think about, if you don't want them to adjust anything just ask for an evaluation first.
Or if you have some bodyworkers nearby - Alexander, feldenkrais types etc I don't know about cost or ins..for that though

Default Hi

I am not an expert by any means but I wanted to offer you some support. I too have lumbar issues. I just had a lumbar disectomy 3 months ago L3/L4 & L4/L5 I am also in alot of pain in the hip area as well. It definately can be back related. It can also be a few things. Having a baby is very hard on the body especially if you already have a bad back. Everything does get lax. Extra baby weight can put alot of pressure on joints causing them to inflame. same with discs.

You need imaging to see what the exact pathology is before you really can be treated afterall how do we know how to best treat if we do not know what the problem is??

Then a really good physiotherapist. I would stay away from chiro's. People with disc issues and so forth can be damaged even more by a chiro.

Also try antinflammatories if you are not breast feeding.

I just had my son on the 1st of Feb. I was on bed rest all nine months as I was with both of my girls who are ONLY 2 and 3. I literally had three kids in three years and I can feel how it took its toll on my body for sure. However, like I mentioned I still have no idea how much worse I could have gotten over the past year.

Last chiro I saw turned me away after 4 visits anyhow so I dont think ill being trying that route again. That was the 3rd one I have seen...or should I say ive seen their back since they are so good at turning it on me. I dont understand why docs are so quick to tell you they cant help you. Maybe im in the wrong state for pain management!! Im not sure what you mean by "bodyworker" if you mean manipulation then yes ive done that with the lst chiro I saw who just so happened to be the team MD for the Ohio state buckeyes!! (no im not a HUGE fan, lol) I really had high hopes for him but it seemed like he didnt want to be bothered with me so he, too, referred me back to my PCP!

I wonder if you went to an Urgent care center & told them about the hip pain, if they would xray then???
maybe not mention the DDD/ spinal stuff unless you have to...

But it might be related to the spine stuff - hard to say without imaging or x rays, or a Dr, DC, or PT that will palpate the hip area to verify.

My dad had DDD & PD and I think most of the time the DDD is the more limiting due to the pain. He's had back pain for many yrs.
He has a TENS that he wears quite often now, no Drs have mentioned that for you?

you might also look into nutritional info & supplements , alternative care - acupuncture/hypnosis...

body workers/structural integration different from chiropractic - some names like Mackenzie, Bowen
I always forget this guys name - Erik Dalton - hip pain-

Default Hip pain

Hip and back pain can definitely be related-but which comes first?
A problem in one area will soon affect other areas as the body tries to compensate. Muscles get tight and sore, joints move out of position, ligaments get stretched and so on.
See a good physiotherapist. Avoid doctors as they don't have the depth of knowledge.
Your Dr should have referred you to a physio, but they seem to avoid doing that.
Your physio will check all joints for proper positioning and movement, and can gently adjust as needed.
I'd avoid a chiro at this stage, though personally i go to mine very 3 months and over time he has been a life saver for me when my hip joints lock up.
So don't discount chiros at all. Horses for courses.
Avoid anti-inflammatories-they are bad news. Don't be part of the drug testing!
Take slow release paracetamol-this was originally designed as an anti-inflammatory, though it's now not classed as one , and is the only one I use now.
Keep going until you find the right one who can find out what is happening. May take a few attempts, and ask questions!

Get labs done, rule out inflammatory and seronegative arthropathies....they're cheap!

yes I do think there is a correlation to hip pain and to back pain. I have a herniated disk at l5 s1 and l4-l5 is buldging... at least it was as of 3 years ago. I still have pain in my back that radiates down my leg. I often have hip pain and pain in my pelvis. I have decided to start back up on my PT exercises to try to stregenthen the core muscles and see if the pain subsides. One thing that PT had me use was an SI belt to help stabilize my SI joint, that helped my back pain and hip pain.
