Confused Progressive bi-lateral Neuropathy. So Frustrated

I'm new to this forum thing, but am at the point of trying anything. I am 42 with a prior L5/S1 discetomy (12yrsago). I now have progressively worsening bi-lateral neuropathy with some mild sciatica on the right side. It all started 18 mos ago with sharp burning in my right knee when kneeling. PT w/traction move that to the left. We stopped PT and burning went away. Then the neuropathy started. It is getting worse. Even on Neurontin. MRI report says "L5-S1: There is a broad based extrusion type disc herniation with extension of disc material above and below the intervertebral disc space at the lumbarsacral junction in the central zone over a lenth of 1.8cm. t2 hyperintensity within the disc material centrally suggesting an annular tear. Disc material mildly impresses on the ventral thecal sac and results in bilateral foraminal stenosis moderate on the left and severe on the right. Contact of disc material with the exiting L5 nerve root on the right is likely." I am seeing a Neurologist that is the head of the department. She Has done an EMG that came back "Normal". Now wants to do another test on "small nerve fibers." An e-consult with a neuro-surgeon suggests shots in my back (My regular dr suggests against) and additional x-rays which were done today. My confusion is why over-look a known problem and look for something else? Aqua therapy has gone nowhere. Any advice???????
