Default Scoliosis, anyone?

Hi everyone,

I can't find anyone with Scliosis on this forum. It has gotten much worse in the last year (I am 60 YEARS old; don't feel it menatally -- DO physically a lot. I am from the boomer generation and still feel that energy but can't participate like I used to.)

I also have akathisia, and can't find anyone on the web with that condition.

So I feel lonely sometimes.

My mom's scoliosis (it's inherited) got pretty disabling in her last years. [Doesn't mean mine will take the same course.] Ten years ago I married a man 7 and 1/2 years younger, so I feel so old often. Can't carry a lot lately.

I do need to see another orthopedist. Long story, with physiatrists, etc.

Anyway, if anyone has Scoliosis, or knows someone close to them who has it, or thinks I'm in the wrong forum, I would love to here from you.

Also, I am new and would like to introduce myself just a bit.

My name is Rhoda, I live in NYC, used to be a programmer and then a human services worker. I work per-diem in the last field. To supplement my SSD. I am also Bipolar II, and have esophageal problem, food-addicted, and don't know what to eat .

Thanks for reading; I mean it! You are an intelligreat and kind bunch.

Default hello Rhoda

Well, you aren't by yourself. I have Scoliosis. First I am Julia, Jo JoJo. You can call me Jo. lol

I will be 64 next week. I didn't know I had this until recently. I have so many other things wrong with back/spine I guess I just stuck that one down in the toteum pole. This past year I got to the point of hurting so bad I could not walk straight, had much pain and things went down fast from there.

The Dr. only says it will get worse with age..........duh! My other issue's with spine has gotten worse also with age. It hurts like heck, and I walk with ........how do I explain this, feels like I am twisting around and that gets everything off balance and then I start falling and breaking things, like bones and such.

Rhoda, when I don't have so much on me I will look some things up and if you do the same or get info from others we can compare notes on what this painful disease will do and how to help it if possible.

I have a brother that just had a stroke a few days ago and I have been tied up there, haven't had much time to do any research.

I'm glad you posted, many times people will have other spine and back problems and just don't mention this. I grant you, when they get older they will get worse. Frightening isn't it. I guess we could both scream for help and others will speak up.

That was a lot of words tohave said nothing!! You take care and I'll catch back up with you soon.

It was very nice to meet you Rhoda. Hope we can find help on that issue at least.

Hi Rhoda and Jo....

I have congenital scoliosis and spina-bifida, along with a host of other spinal anomalies. The scoliosis is considered to be severe....42 and 58 degrees, but it's not as noticeable as one would think...I guess I curve in all the right places! LOL. But you're both right, I also tend to place the scoliosis way down on the list. I'm 48, with an active six y/o son....I've learned to choose my battles, and I suppose the scoliosis is the least of my worries.

Do either of you have hardware to correct/support the spine? I had Herrington rods from '69 to '87...went 16 years without anything, and then had titanium rods put in in '03. I'm wired for sound, let me tell ya...from the crack of dawn to the upper thorasic...two rods on either side, and two 3 in. screws in each vertebra. I'm hoping that the extra support will serve to minimize any age-related problems with my spine, but everything has an expiration date, doesn't it?

I hope you're both having lo/no pain days. Nice to meet you.

Hi, I just found out that I have Scoliosis about a month ago. My Orthopeadist said that my curvature was 52 degrees and that surgery would be best to correct it. He told me about Spinal Fusion Surgery. During the surgery, the docters are to put 2 large metal rods and hooks on my spine to straighten it out. I should be in the hospital for about 4-5 days after my surgery. I should have about a 16'' incision down my back. The surgery will be sometime in January. Any questions, just e-mail me at falcon_729@msn.com

Hope this helps a little!

HEY Rhoda!
I too have multiple things going on. You sound very close to me, Bi-Polar, and so forth. I am 55 over weight and my mind is young but not my body. I used to get up on a chair easy and now I can barely do it or not at all. I don't know what degree mine is in(spine) but I know it is not REAL bad. I have bone on bone and narrowing of spine to where my nerves are being pinched off. The neuro told me last week that he couldn't help me. Pretty sick! As it is getting harder and harder to walk or drive. He didn't even tell me what I could do to make it better or pain meds or any thing. What a quack! So I am going to seek out a second opinion. Bunch of crap if you ask me.
Never feel alone cause there are tons of caring people here. I too am new to this sight. I use to belong to the first Braintalk. But it crashed so I am hearing. Anyway want to chat, drop a line. Angels
