Default does this mean surgery

Hi, I am new to the group, for 2 years I have been dealing with inadequet drs that made me feel like my deg disc and bulge or even the arthritis should cause me the debilitating pain I have. They were right, but they werent doing the right test. I found another dr who sent me to have a myleogram, and they found that between my l3 and s1 there is an inpingment of my nerve roots with quite a bit of swelling. FINALLY... So from what I am gathering is that surgery will be next? I am researching and I understand it for the most part. Any input would be great. the pain is constant, and it shoots down my legs and makes 2 of my toes numb. when I drive the pain shoots me thru the roof. its sharp, and achy and even sometimes feels like someone is squeezing my lower part of my ribs.

thanks so much

Hi shelbiew, welcome.

Not necessarily. Surgery should only be considered after all other options have been tried and failed, and then only after multiple opinions.

Physical therapy is usually the first line treatment, but your doctors may want to try to reduce the swelling and inflammation first; that may take care of a significant part of the problem.
