The majority of Pain Management doctors are anesthesiologist. Morphine does nothing for me. I had been given morphine when my GallBladder was removed several years ago. It did not help my pain; but even tho I knew they weren't there, I did see bugs on the ceiling. When I had my fusion 8 years ago, the doctor's office listed Morphine as my being alergic. This avoids my getting morphine for pain. I have had a few surgeries since. I have had the surgeries done at the same hospital my Pain Doctor is associated with. He has been given the okay by surgeons to be listed as managing my pain. This has been great because so many medical people do not really understand treating surgical pain, along with ongoing pain being treated with the PM doctor. I have asked, and have been given Fentanyl IV with the little button to push for pain when having my last few surgeries done. As previously mentioned , my PainManagement doctor is listed as the major doctor treating my pain. This has been extremely helpful in keeping me comfortable. Gerry |
Grace,
I do want to mention the fact that when I had my fusion, I was given a soft brace to wear for 6 months. I wore it all day except when showering and bedtime. It does remind you not to do any bending, lifting, etc. That is so very important because you can cause yourself more harm. You may have to "close your eyes"; but pushing youself is not worth it. You will have to be very careful bending when feeding dogs or them possibly jumping on you. If need be; maybe hubby can pick up some carry outs for dinners. As Pam mentioned prepare and freeze whatever you can make ahead, including freezing bread. Stock frig with lunchmeat. Pantry with cereals, etc. You will be fine as long as you heed not overdoing things; especially the bending. Pray all will go well. Gerry |

My mother and brother both had 3 level lumbar disc fusion at Emory! They both thought a lot of " Doc" who from what I understand is the head doctor of a team that works with each patient. I've had four back surgeries in Virginia but it seems like I'm having a lot more trouble. You are going to a good place with great facilities. Best of luck.
