Default Ticked Off Thread.....

I'm really angry right now at the family members of one of our residents at work.... She choked on a piece of bread and lost consciousness. They called the ambulance and she ended up in ICU..... The family was angry that they didn't let her die.... her kids want the money.... This is not one of the alzheimers residents... she had just moved from independent to assisted living and was doing great.... I'm just amazed at how some of our elderly are treated....

That's so horrible. It's people like who cause me to loose all faith in humanity. I hope she makes a full recovery and then decides to write them all out of her will.

I understand why that would make you angry.

Are you sure she didn't have DNR orders? I have the DO NOT RESUSCITATE orders in with my health care information. I'd be furious is they revived me from a condition such as that!

Red face hi... sorry if i'm ignorant

Hi...

well, from FeelingGoofy's post though what i got was that the kids were not concerned about their mom's wishes but about inheriting her money. which sounds icky to me.

now this DNR thing though, independently of this incident... how does that work... i mean, basically even if something gets stuck in your throat - say, which can be dislodged so you can breathe again in time NOT to cause BRAIN DAMAGE at all... then, does a DNR clause mean they are supposed to let you die?

Barbo, i wonder if you could explain? sorry.

It sounds to me that the hearts of the children where not right. Hearing this report sounds like there was no love for the victom,a the children just wanted the money. Dieing from choking on food is not a natural death. The patient lived, and survived the eating accident. It's sad that the children wanted the parent to pass away. BF

((((((((((Sad))))))))))

yeah. that's just how it sounds to me too.

Well, she's well now... let's hope this lady stays in good health to a RIPE old age... it is sad her family doesn't appreciate her but perhaps other residents do at least.

Oh my goodness this is heartless.
All of us children keep telling Mum and Dad to spend their money, be comfortable in their old age!!!! It is after all their money not ours.

I love how you love your residents, Goofy. I still often think of the dear ones I cared for in the Alzheimers unit in PA.

I am wondering if there is a piece that is missing with this story, though. Is it possible that this poor lady had a serious brain injury from the lack of oxygen when she choked? I am wondering if she is now on machines to keep her alive and if that is what the family is reacting to?

I have seen my share of heartless families - still do at the hospital, but there is sometimes more than meets the eye.

At anyrate - I agree that our parents should spend my inheritance and have a fabulous fun life!
