Yes, exactly Wish. What really is the purpose of knowing those.
The suicides from my life, well I don't know what category. All of them were people with multitudes of problems in their lives. In the end, I know one was impulsive as he was definitely altered by drugs when he shot himself. But his life was one problem after another until they piled into this huge mountain of grief in his mind. I know when I have thought of it, it was once due to extreme emotional pain, and the other...well, just being tired of all of 'it' and not wanting to deal. Good luck on the exam Wish.

Alffe and hsiw have touched on something profound about Durkheim's suicide analysis.
In order to be meaningful, a typology must meet 2 conditions: (1) Its categories must be exhaustive. That means, they include all cases. Alffe notes the impulse category, which doesn't fit into Durkheim's typology. (2) Its categories must be mutually exclusive. Aristotle, for example, groups governments by who is running things, the "one, the few, or the many." That is an either-or sort of grouping, i.e., "many" cannot be "one." As hsiw observes, Durkheim's categories do not exclude one another; a concrete case may be two or more of what he describes. You see why the typology's explanatory power is weak. Well, on both accounts, Durkheim's typology leaves much to be desired. I view it as a point of departure, not an end. He was a real pioneer, with all the faults that pioneers have. Tom |

Wow- Alffe, you've done some digging!
Addy, I couldn't remember at all posting this once upon a time, and even what class it was (until I saw the scientology part and remembered!). So much has changed since then, definitely... but like always, I've always been battling to understand . . . everything. These three types of suicides, I've come across often by now. And in a way its just another way of "labeling" people, classifying to help us to understand, when in truth - we will never really understand completely. I am amazed at Lara's responses, wishing she were still around now to add her own insights on the matter. I am having a rough time these past few days, I've come to realize that no matter how optimistic I may try to be, deep down - I am not really so. And I guess that has to do with what Alffe said, "life is challenging to put it mildly." My biggest challenge is trying to enjoy each day and not just try and race to the end and get through it all. It's definitely a survival mechanism, a way to keep suicidal thoughts far far away. But oftentimes I feel like a 95 year old lady, so tired and exhausted because of it. |

((Wish)) Instead of "feeling like a 95 yr old lady, tired and exhausted from it"...try to think about what Lara wishes...Re: I want to grow up to be a scary little old lady who knows her own mind
My heart always goes out to you dear friend, especially on your anniversary dates and when I think about all your mother is missing...your engagement, a someday wedding, and hopefully grandchildren. That's a lot to miss out on in life. We are here for you....if not in real life, always on this written page.
