Default 5 days to go

On September the 10th it is World Suicide Prevention Day

Lets stsrt a debate

The word TABBOO

deffintions

1. Socially or Culturaly prohibitted
forbidden to be used, mentioned, or approached because of social or cultural rather than legal prohibitions

2. Unaceptable
not acceptable or healthful

3. Sacred and Prohibbited
religion set apart as sacred and at the same time forbidden to be used

Just these three definintions are enough to scare the hell out of anyone.........let alone talk about a TABOO subject

Synonms:

Unmentionable
Unthinkable
Banned
Prohibited
Outlawed
Proscribed
Inviolable

More reason not to talk about a TABOO subject

But do you know what unless we TALK it remains a TABOO.......

lets talk

David

Blimey.........this was a conversation stopper.....

What do people do?

World Suicide Prevention Day gives organizations, government agencies and individuals a chance to promote awareness about suicide, mental illnesses associated with suicide, as well as suicide prevention. Organizations such as the International Association for Suicide Prevention (IASP) and World Health Organization (WHO) play a key role in promoting this event.

Events and activities for World Suicide Prevention Day include:
■The launch of new government initiatives to prevent suicide.
■Conferences, open days, educational seminars or public lectures.
■Media programs promoting suicide awareness and prevention.
■Memorial services or candlelight ceremonies to remember those who died from suicide.
■Organizing cultural or spiritual events, fairs or exhibitions.
■Launches of publications about suicide awareness and prevention.
■Training courses about suicide and depression awareness.

Many of these initiatives are celebrated in various countries worldwide. Some of these events and activities are held at a local level, while others are nation-wide. Many communities around the world reaffirm their commitment to suicide prevention on World Suicide Prevention Day.

Background

Nearly 3000 people on average commit suicide daily, according to WHO. For every person who completes a suicide, 20 or more may attempt to end their lives. About one million people die by suicide each year. Suicide is a major preventable cause of premature death which is influenced by psycho-social, cultural and environmental risk factors that can be prevented through worldwide responses that address these main risk factors. There is strong evidence indicating that adequate prevention can reduce suicide rates.

World Suicide Prevention Day, which first started in 2003, is annually held on September 10 each year as an IASP initiative. WHO co-sponsors this event. World Suicide Prevention Day aims to:
■Raise awareness that suicide is preventable.
■Improve education about suicide.
■Spread information about suicide awareness.
■Decrease stigmatization regarding suicide.

World Health Organisation and International Association for Suicide Prevention work with governments and other partners to ensure that suicide is no longer stigmatized, criminalized or penalized. WHO's role is to build political action and leadership to develop national responses to prevent suicide, strengthen national planning capacity to establish the core building blocks of such a national response, and build the national capacities to implement these responses

2 days to go .................start spreading the word

World Suicide Prevention Day was first observed in 2003 and it now takes place on 10 September each year. This year 2013 marks the 11th anniversary of the awareness day and this year the theme is "Stigma: A Major Barrier to Suicide Prevention".

The World Health Organisation estimates that about one million people around the world die by suicide every year. There are people all over the world who feel so low that suicide seems like the only way out. But there is always another way - and we can tackle it together!

So, how can these suicides be prevented? Well, there are many problems being dealt with worldwide. One is restricting the access people have to potentially dangerous products: for example, charcoal burning has been such a huge problem in Asian cities, that charcoal sales in supermarkets have been reduced. In the UK, a programme to stop over-the-counter medication being obtained so easily has reduced overdose deaths by 34%.

From this idea of resriction access, a number of very effective prevention programmes and guidelines have been put in place in various places throughout the world.

So now the question is - what can you do? There are endless ways you can make a difference. This day is all about breaking down the barriers between nations and working together - so there are no barriers to how you help either!

You could organise exhibitions, fairs, memorials walks or ceremonies, to remember those who have lost their lives so tragically. Other options include writing articles, speaking on radio interviews or even just distributing some leaflets!

On 10 September 2013 the International Association for Suicide Prevention is asking you to light a candle at 8.00pm and place it in a window to show your support for World Suicide Prevention Day and suicide prevention across the world.

If you yourself are feeling suicidal, or know someone who is, please consult the International Association for Suicide Prevention Web Directory of crisis centres across the world.

Thumbs up Grateful as well

Thank you David. It takes great love, great humility, great strength to be willing to go into the discussion of taboo. Frankly, were there less taboo, there would be greater health in this society which embraces the globe.

Were there less taboo, there would be more willingness to seek help for emotional and mental problems. In my own family, I have a parent who grew up in the age of taboo, and just cannot see the light of day for the benefit of therapy to help overcome traumas of life so as to know joy.

Were there less taboo, religion would be far less about rules based ancient proclamations of man and FAR MORE about faith. Goodness, one might even see shame find its way out the door with taboo....... Shame is far too often used as a tool to control taboo things which may make one feel slightly uncomfortable.

Were taboo evaporated, just maybe we who populate the planet might be able and willing to embrace those round about us who can use a HUG though the day because all we who walk the face of the globe experience hard times and hard days.

Thank you David, for helping expunge taboo....... one little bit at a time.
