Hope to catch up with you both again soon.

It looks like I've been left here all by my lonesome..... but that's OK. Now that I have the opportunity, I want to say goodnight to all my friends and say thank you to Nik-key and Moi for their company this evening.

I hope you both get some sleep tonight, and I look forward to "chatting" to you both another day.

You wouldn't have been. My daughter called me just before 0600 and said that one of our neighbor's houses was on fire. You could hear fire engines and firefighters all over the place.

My husband called me about 30 minutes later (just as I was getting back to sleep) and gave me more information. I'm up now......<yawn>...... went to bed after 0100 this a.m.

Fire started in a house that's been empty since before we bought ours in that city--over 25 years. They're rows in that line of houses (not ours--we own both sides of a twin) and the fire spread to the house next door, to another neighbor who doesn't have insurance (what WAS she thinking--she already HAD one house fire and lost her husband in it), and smoke was in a third neighbor's house.

At least no one was hurt this time.

Think it might be nap time today!

Oh NO! That's terrible and very scary!

I'm so glad no-one was injured.

Me too.

The house that was empty had workers in it during my son's wedding. Don't know what they were doing, but that was one of the very few times that I saw people in there. My H said that the door to the house kept being left open. My theory is that someone probably set the fire--and it's probably right.

Why do people do things like that???

The woman who lost her H to the fire lost him about 12 years ago. If you've looked at the pics in my album of the wedding, her one kid is in there. He and my son have been friends since they were little. His brothers were playing Army on their 3d floor and using candles instead of flashlights. Things caught on fire, dad came up tried to put out the fire and passed out IN the fire. Spent about a week at a local hospital's burn unit before he died. It was really sad. That fire went into 2 other houses--same owners now who are affected by this one.

My H slept through THAT fire and only woke up when the firefighters smashed glass out in the other houses. This time, he proudly told me, he woke up BEFORE that happened. <snicker> He can sleep through anything usually.

If it would have spread further, probably only those houses would have been involved--and our garage to the one house. My H told me he and my SIL and DD moved stuff out of that garage in case it DID spread.

It just makes you wonder about your own safety and fire.

I just cannot understand the mentality of some-one who's prepared to set fire to anybody's house and destroy all their belongings.

I wonder if they ever consider the consequences of maybe some-one sick in the house, and unable to get out......

And yes.....I have looked at your album and been through the wedding photos. I'm so sorry that your friends have had to go through the residual effects of a second fire. That's just not fair.

Obviously not. I think they're bent on doing the most damage--or seeing it just for the sake of fire.

My H and I used to be resident managers of a 28 unit apartment building. Someone set a fire in the storage closet on the 5th floor (where we lived). My daughter was 6 mos old at the time. Luckily, I had a friend over. Got the friend to take her out of the building and I called the fire dept. Got everyone out of the building, including a girl down the hall from me whose baby was about my DD's age.

She was right next to the fire (her apt.). By the time I could get her and the baby out of the apt., the entire hallway was filled with smoke. Had to wet dishtowels down and hold them over her nose and the baby's too.

Makes me shudder thinking about it.

I don't see the thrill or purpose in setting a fire in a building that's occupied or next to one that is.

I don't see how these people could get any enjoyment out of setting fire to buildings either, and it doesn't surprise me one little bit that it makes you shudder. I would too if something like that had happened to me.

I haven't beenn through a fire (thank goodness) but I have been through a hostage situation with a man and a rifle. I still remember the details of that, and it was 30 years ago now.

Some things you never forget!

I'm sure you do remember the details. That must have been awfully scary.
How did that turn out?

Why is it that I can remember the awful, scary stuff vividly and the good stuff, well, that just seems to fade from memory?

When I asked the psych doc about that, he told me that he wasn't surprised that I didn't remember a lot of my childhood, etc. considering I grew up in an alcoholic family. It was good to have some confirmation that I was somewhat 'normal' with my memories. I'd always felt like a weirdo for not being able to remember stuff like that.
