Default When There Are No Words

Human beings strive to understand and to be understood. We have developed elaborate systems of communication to achieve this common goal. We fill books with letters strung together to make words....strung together to make sentences...strung together to make sense.

Words flow like a river from our mouths carrying our ideas, hopes, and dreams. Some words gently carry our messages when spoke with honesty and sincerity. Others fail because they are said without thought or care. We use words every day and in many ways. We try hard to express what we think and feel.

So, it was a day to remember when all the words faded and were washed away. It was a time when there were no words left to say. People looked at each other in disbelief because they had always relied on words to speak. When they opened their mouths to talk, not a sound could they make - not even a squawk. But people had to make do because people are busy and life goes on.

Instead of saying goodbye to her family as she left for school, a little girl blew a handful of kisses. Her mother caught them and and held them close to her heart. Down the street, a man stopped by to make soup for a sick friend each day. This made her feel better, and it made him feel better too.

By the river, a woman sat quietly. A friend passing by placed a reassuring hand on her shoulder. The woman smiled. She no longer felt alone.
Across town a couple was enjoying each other's company. She squeezed his hand. He smiled and gave her a wink. When the music played, they danced. Romance filled the room and everyone there understood love in full bloom.

Knowing the longing in her dear friends' heart, a neighbor picked a bouquet of flowers to comfort her. Their beauty filled her home with joy that day.
A goup of people gathered to remember a friend they had lost. One was still, one looked at the sky. One looked at his shoes. And one cried but all stretched out their arms to hold and confide.

Days went by and as one person's actions touched another, everyone grew closer. They were surprised they hadn't missed the words that had faded away. Hours seemed to have more minutes - and a day felt like a day. Because they had spoken with kindness, without words they said all they had felt and all that they wanted to say.

So on the day the words came back people began to use them carefully, for now they understood their purpose and power. Everyone beamed with pride and jumped up and down as it was announced that actions would now have SOUND!

The world became a better place, for everyone now understood that speaking from the heart is the most meaningful way to live.

One of the reasons I like the above so much is that it reminds me of all of you....I can't really hear you but I sure can feel what you're saying.

Thanks Alffe... I sure needed that today. The hardest thing about being confined to a bed 24/7 has been just that--that I don't see people and feel their comforting touches... or even hear their spoken words too often. I am forced to rely on the internet and the people I meet... but sometimes it just doesn't feel like enough. I suppose that as friendships grow, that will probably change.. but the hardest part has been losing my dear friends.
