I am not sure if some of you remember the post I made a couple of months ago about House MD forming a coalition with NAMI; if not here is the link.
http://neurotalk.psychcentral.com/sh...light=house+MD Last weeks episode was shocking and powerful. And has taken me a full week to recover enough from to even talk about. One of the long standing cast members kills himself, with a gun. It's all there, the shock, the guilt, the grief, denial....the why's the what if's......... Painful to see... yet so needed. I wont say too much more about the show in case someone wants to watch it. If you do, here is the link.... click on the episode titled Simple Explanation http://www.fox.com/fod/play.php?sh=house Suicide IS being talked about. People are trying to make a difference. House MD is still one of the top ranking TV series, I think it brave and heroic even, that they are taking risks to try to bring suicide out of the darkness. FYI, you can still buy the House-ism T-shirt - Normal's Overrated. All Proceeds benefit NAMI http://www.nbcuniversalstore.com/ind...se_charitytees

Ok...I believe in the message...I'm not sure about the messenger. Thank you Nikki for posting the link...I just watched it and I ordered the T Shirt.
I guess the important thing is that a lot of people watch this show so hopefully a lot of people will get the message. I must take a look at ASPS's site and see if their opinion was any different than the warning they gave about Will Smiths movie...7 (something) or if they even have one. And on a selfish note....I've missed you Nikki and continue to keep you in my heart and prayers. Please remember that you are loved around here.

The public, and media must do more to remove the stigma of mental health issues. They should be more open, and honest, for most families know of at least one person who is struggling emotionally,or mentally.
They are making commercials, talking about Abilify, and depression. That's one small step. There needs to be more. We are not in the dark ages. We are living in a age of discovery, knowledge, and understanding, finding that many of these illnesses are genetic. BF Last edited by Brokenfriend; 04-16-2009 at 06:06 PM. |

Our local paper had an obituary for an 18 year old girl yesterday. There was paragraph after paragraph describing her accomplishments and interests and all the things she was loved for. Then it said that, although she was wonderful and talented and smart, she struggled with depression and bipolar. It went on to encourage familes to look for signs of depression in their teens and the importance of getting help and talking about it.
I was very impressed that they took their own horrible tragedy and publically and openly reached out to others. One voice added to the many....to reach to those who need to hear. |

(((Alffe))) thanks... Seven Pounds --the movie w/ Will SMith.... more shocking in many ways than "House" Tv show espisode . it is NOT "the pusuit of Happyness --same director ... very INtense, powerfull... but not 'easy' to watch and many may not be able to watch... Wil SMith brilliantlly conveys the depths of pain, suffering LOSSes more emotions.... issues....aspects of Suicide and DEATH but its also a LOVE story... Life and Death issues are touched -- chronic illnesses, domestic violence , elder care --the scenes in nursing home soo powerful-- deep complex movie... but it is a movie.... here many share their experiences.... Personal REAL stories of so many ...survivors, of fighting demons and seeking answers HOPE... sorry... losing my thought train now... Death... how when DEATH comes... into our lives... LIFE and Death issues... manifestations... affects... much that's been sitting heavily painfully thanks...ALL... for sharing, caring, more.. for this special place, family where can TALK about it and for ALL who are BLESSings |

I admit that I didn't see the movie 7 pounds. I was "scared off" by the warning from AFSP (American Foundation for Suicide Prevention) but now I've changed my mind and I want to see it.
Thank you pono for making me rethink this and for sharing here when I know how difficult it must be.

I saw it.
Since you know that suicide is part of the movie, then it's not a shocker. This is Will Smith's best performance ever IMO. It touches on real human emotions. I don't want to give away good parts. I'm sure most has been on websites already. PM me if you want Alffe.

I haven't seen the movie, I am not sure I can just yet. I did not know the House episode would have a suicide or I don't think I would have seen it either. I love House, is my favorite TV show. I knew they formed the coalition and I knew they were working to bring suicide out of the darkness, but I did NOT expect one of the doctors to kill himself.
I was horrified that one of the cast member I have come to really like shot himself. When I saw the scene, I flashed back to Dad and just sat here sobbing and throwing up for all I was worth. What I liked about the episode, and the reason I kept watching after the inital shock, was the reactions of his family and friends. I related to every emotion expressed. I thought it great too, that they had Hugh Laurie -the leading star, be the one who went into denial. I remember this in my own family, people trying to find any other possibility that could have happened. My mom and step sister were there when he killed himself, it was all too clear there was NO other possibility! Yet, even faced with so much proof, I guess one just has to question. ((BJ)) how wonderful to see you dear friend ((Pono)) your posts always inspire me and give me strength
