Hi Doody. I've been in Madison for a root canal and out of touch with everyone. So glad your Mom is finally home after all she (and you) have been through. I'm a sucker for happy endings. Love, Barb

Well I'm back.
3rd time, mom goes back into surgery at 4 so I'll have to scoot along. They were going to take some of the hardware out of her arm in 3 months...but apparently a plate and some wires have moved out of place again, and are shoving into her flesh. They're worried about infection and gangreen so they are just going to remove most of the hardware period. Put her back in a cast. HUGE HUGE SIGH!!!!!!!!! I have no idea what this means for the future of her arm. I've only talked to my dad and well...hopefully I'll get more on the story from the doc.

Oh dear .... how very hard for your poor dear mom and, somehow, even harder for you.
I'll be holding you, your mom and dad in my heart and prayers .... and waiting to hear the results. |

I'm home, she's out of surgery and back in her room. And I got the scoop from the surgeon.
Apparently 2 weeks ago at that checkup they determined that she had staph infection, so they put her on an antibiotic. However when she went in for her checkup today they discovered the plate and screws had come loose and the plate had forced its way through the large incision. The doc said he had to take the hardware out immediately for fear of the staph infection. He didn't want to take out the hardware for another 4-6 months but said this was too serious to leave it in. He did say the tissue inside her arm looked good but he's very concerned. He's having an infectious disease specialist see mom tomorrow to determine what course they need to take. He said it could mean inserting an intravenous tube into her arm which he said would require her going back to the nursing facility to receive IV treatments for the staff infection. When he said that, my poor tired dad looked as if he would just fall over right there on the spot. She thought she would just be staying the night. She doesn't know yet that she can't leave until Friday. The one good thing is that they will remove the splint/cast on Friday. He said her arm is healed enough to go ahead and remove it, but that it's still a very delicate situation. I didn't even know she had staph. crikies, even my mom and dad didn't realize it was staph. Apparently they didn't pay attention at the appointment 2 weeks ago. These guys better get something right here pretty soon!!!!!! She's been through too much as it is. Thanks you guys.

The infectious disease doc had a line run into her arm and up and around down to near her heart. She will get an infusion of vancomycin every day for 6 weeks but can go to the clinic to have that done. Thank goodness she doesn't have to go back into that nursing home.
Now if her arm will just heal.
