I slept with a wet head. Company stayed way later than I had hoped, so by the time I got showered, my head was still wet when I went to bed. It was warm in the room, so I left a fan going. I woke at 3 am FREEZING! I turned off the fans, closed the window, and went back to bed. I woke up with a sore throat. That kind where you feel like something is wrapped around your vocal cords. I have been slamming back the zicam and hope this mess goes away. I never ever believed my mother when she said "sleeping with wet hair will give you a cold" It never has before. is this her revenge? The mothers curse?
What other silly wives tales have come true or puzzled you? Have you ever slept with wet hair or gone out with wet hair and gotten a cold from it? I never get colds, or at least they are rare, so this is a head scratcher for me.

Well, my face never froze that way when I made a face at my brother, so that one can't be true. (kicker getting all scientific now) Like MS is said to be, colds are caused by viruses. BUT - perhaps exposure to cold, sleeping with wet hair and the window open, etc., going out without the scarf your aunt knitted, etc) can lower your resistance. Viruses mutate quickly which is why no one has cured the common cold, Bacteria (UTIs, strep, ear aches, etc.) are caused by bacteria and getting right antibiotic can kill bacteria. Getting RIGHT antibiotic is why sometimes Doctor changes us to another one.
When you sneeze, they say your heart does stop. That's why they say "God bless you."

I get a dry & sore throat if we have the fan too high at night. I think it is from the air movement. It's said I snore a little too...
I've gone to bed with damp hair and never noticed a problem, other than curls and crinkles pressed into my har

I agree with Jo*mar - the only damage wet hair would cause is a bad hair day! You have to be exposed to the cold virus in order to catch a cold. Living in a damp, cold environment for an extended time can lower your resistance, but one night wouldn't do it. Blame the fan! Or maybe coincidence.
I grew up with all the old wives takes and took delight in challenging them (and driving Grandma mad while I was at it!) Black cats crossing your path, walking under ladders, opening umbrellas indoors. I probably would have walked under a ladder in the house with a black cat in one hand and an open umbrella in the other if I could have located them all at the same time. Hope you're feeling better soon. C |

I heard one back when I was pregnant & still working.
One lady insisted that raising my arms up high while pregnant would cause the cord to loop around the baby's neck! Anyone ever hear that one?? I tried to explain to her how that related cause is quite impossible the way the body is built. Wish I had the internet back in 1978 LOL. I helped hold many pieces of sheet rock overhead while quite pregnant with #1 and no problems at all. {trying to get main rooms finished before kid arrived} not to mention the normal reaching up of day to day living...

I agree with Jo.... I vote for the fan as being the culprit!
Over the years, besides stiff neck, sore throat, etc from the fan, now I get leg cramps if it blows on me. So I never sit directly in the fan stream. I angle it up or to the side always. We do not have central A/C. But I do have a portable A/C now in the bedroom for 80+ degree nights.

Not Unless you are sleeping with someone who has a cold........or, yes, the fan can be the culprit. I've had larrengitis(sp) from a fan.

My hair is long and thick, and since I know I'm too lazy to get up early to wash it, yep, I've slept with wet hair many times..If I have the fan on, I may get a bit of a sore throat. That's because the fan dries the air (and my throat), and blows dust etc around. I've never caught a cold because of it. Nor have I gotten pneumonia from going outside without a hat (they just slide off my pointed little head)..

I think I must have been fighting a cold already, and the wet hair lowering my body temp, and the fan lowering the room temp, ontop of me snoring in cold air (even though I dont snore, and you cant prove it) was enough to put me over the edge. I have laryingitis. While I not horribly ill, I am in the slow lane, and have been running a tiny fever. just one degree is enough to put me in the wobbly lane. Had a fight with a woman in the potty at Target. I needed cat litter, and the cats dont understand that I have a cold and didnt want to go.
My MIL used to be upset with me constantly while pregnant because I would hang clothes out on the line. She said it would tie the baby's cord in a knot. I told her some woman made that up long ago, to avoid having to hang out the laundry. I believe the one about the cat box with the contamination from kitty feces, but I can certainly hang out my sheets without fear. Maybe I should have thrown that salt over my shoulder when I spilled it the other day. Was it the left or the right shoulder?
