Sitting here at my computer, happily reading posts, when I hear a yowl and that familiar "gack gack gack". There's my cat, leaning over the carpet AND my shoes, ready to barf.
I leap (ha ha) out of my chair, grab the cat to move her a few inches onto the vinyl floor, she doesn't like the idea, and stabs a claw nail into a vein on the inside of my wrist. The cat's trying to yack, I'm trying to unhook her from my circulatory system, the other cat's hurrying over to see what she's missing, I'm yelling "OW OW OW" and my husband's standing there trying to figure who or what to grab. Holy cow. Everything's all mopped up now, the bleeding has stopped, I've got a blue lump on my wrist, and the cat peeled out and headed under a dresser. Just another day in the life.

Sorry.....but I had to laugh. That's an unmistakable sound (cat yaking) for cat owners. There's never a newspaper within reach, either!
I tried to move Gracie once, too, but she dug into the rug and wouldn't budge. I don't guess I'd want anyone scooping me up and moving me if I was standing over the loo! Tigger hides afterwards, too. Gracie keeps returning to the scene of the crime.

It is the law of nature that cats only yak on surfaces which are not easily cleanable. My house is 90% hard surfaces except for an expensive area rug and carpet in the game room. Where does the cat yak? Not on the hardwood, not on the ceramic tile, not on the laminate, oh no not ever. Yak must always be on the expensive Aubusson rug. I have even moved a cat off of said rug only to have them go straight back!

I have a puker in my house. he is a HUGE orange tabby that thinks he is a bottomless pit. He simply eats till it comes out his nose, he then turns and spews! I have taken to standing guard over the 22 year old when I give her "junk food" and make sure that he doesnt crowd her out and gobble it all. I try really hard to keep him on dry, but he does find trouble when and where he can.
Why do they ALWAYS find the carpeted areas? Cant puke on the tile or an easy to wash area, nope, must find carpets. After years of being chucked on the floor, mine have the idea now that gak gak gak means go to the floor. not the couch, not the bed, and not the table! hope you feel better.

The only thing worse is if you hear that sound at 2am and you're sleeping snugly with the cat curled up under your arm. You just hope that it hits the lower part of the blankets or better yet, the floor as the dear kitty tries to get out of the room.
Get well soon B2Y, so many of us can relate. We also had this wee little kitty, Sweet Pea who was famous for going to the highest point in the room before doing projectile vomiting. She could take out more objects in one hurl than any mammal I've ever seen before. She only weighed six pounds.

We have four cats..Oh, if I had a nickel for every time..
Pick 'em up & move 'em, the urge suddenly leaves them. Till they're back on the carpet ~ immediantly back in barf mode. I've even tried slipping newspaper under them to save myself from having to scrub the carpet, but no, they'll have none of that. Fortunately, it's usually a small furball packet. But when my orange tabby overeats, cover the old people & hide the children!

Is there a Mom or pet owner who does not know Yack up close and personal?

Great post. I could really relate to it. On the up side, DH works from home so he is the one cleaning up the gack most of the time.
One of my cats had been a gacker from the time she was just a itty bitty kitten. Once she demanded to go outside when it was dark and all the bobcats and coyotes are looking for a meal. I let her out but followed her to our dirt path where she reeled around like a cat possessed by a demon. Her enormous gack was outside. But that was only one gack out of a decade + of "memories." We got brown colored carpet, perfect for the gacking feline species. |
