My son, Jared, just called with very good news: he passed his electrical test! Out of 7 electricians at the same company, he was the ONLY one who did! It was a specific test that will allow him to work unaccompanied on the surface at a coal mine. (We mine coal here in central Utah -- my husband is the mine electrical coordinator).
There were 240 questions and an electrical diagram to draw, and you had to get 80% to pass. This is the kid who was such a huge underachiever in High School that he had to attend an "alternative" HS to graduate. This is the kid who, if he even brought home his homework, he'd forget to hand it in to the teacher the following day. He didn't know the meaning of the word "study", until he began taking electrical classes 4 years ago (night classes). He has been an electrical apprentice for this company nearly 4 years. In another couple of months he'll qualify to take his Journeyman Electrician test. He should get a raise (or a new job) after he passes that. Just had to celebrate with y'all!

Congratulations to your son Twink...... I can understand your pride.
I know that wonderful feeling when our children do well. It's an emotional rush that makes childbirth and all those teenage years worth while. WTG.

Congrats, Mom and Jared!
I say it's all about finding what interests them and teaching in a way they can get it. My son was like yours. And they said, "Kid, you are going no where!" Maybe not good with books, but always good with his hands, brilliant in math too. I made him go to trades school, but he doubted that would help. He took machine trades. The teacher there really liked him and reccomended him for jobs, as soon as he was about to graduate. The kid always found work, even the way things are. Now, he works for the railroad - 25 yrs old, and he fixes engines! It was worth dragging him to school by the scruff of his neck every day, till he got to trades school.
