I've had the h1n1 shot, as well as the regular flu shot, at the recommendation of my neuro and GP, who keep good tabs on me. I had no reaction to either injection.
It is my understanding that those most vulnerable to the flu are the usual: young kids, ill and elderly. Except with H1N1 its a bit more specific: young kids, those who haven't had any exposure to flu yet or very little exposure, and therefore NO immunity and particularly susceptible. Those who are immuno-compromised (those with AIDs/HIV or MS) are also considered high risk. I understand that if you are taking steroids, starting steroids soon, or just finished a round, you should not get a flu shot as your immunity is particularly low during these times. I think my doc said I had to wait last year until 3 weeks after I finished a round of steroids before getting the flu shot--even though the injection is a dead virus. I've also heard that those of us old enough to have been exposed to the flu in 1976 have some immunity to this swine flu, since the epidemic in the 70s was also a type of swine flu. I know several people at work who have had it, or someone in their family does, not all confirmed, but enough. While some have been pretty ill, they were as sick as one gets with a bad flu, and none had to be hospitalized, including a workmate with MS. |
