If YOU like it, then go for it. But I think too often, there's a buzz word and all the little sheeples just follow that trend, even if it goes over a cliff!

I was looking at th housing marking in my 'hood when we were gonna sell my house. Being old houses, 90% only have one bathroom, like mine.

I specifically wanted only ONE - who wants to clean 4 baths?

The new ones have 3-4! And not just standard johns... they are all tile, all big as my living room. Do I need a personal spa?

Do I need a chef kitchen? Who does? Who are all these 20 year old chefs out there? LOL...

Everyone has such a list of *must-haves* in the houses they buy. I'm shocked at how spoiled people are. They go so over budget, no wonder they default on the mortgage. They will pass up a house because of a room color, and if it needs one room of wall paper or some carpet replaced, they call that a fixer-upper!

Who raised those kids?

Talk about wanting it all, and right now.

When we moved into this new house 5 years ago, the builder gave us a credit to go buy whatever appliances we wanted. I am a pro shopper, so I went on a search. I thought I wanted stainless appliances. I found out I dont. They are the exact same appliance as the white/black/almond ones that are out there. The stove top on gas burners will reflect more heat back towards the pan, but the same can be had for a stainless insert available.

Stainless shows every mark, fingerprint, dust ball, and smudge. You cannot put your magnets on the stainless fridge because its not a metal that allows a magnet to stick. It is popular because its trendy, and fresh, just like avacado and brown used to be. The price was always at least 10% higher for the exact same machine in stainless that was in black/white/almond. It doesnt run better, cleaner, faster, or quieter. It will if you buy the upgrades to the machine itself, not to the color of the appliance.

I agree, its silly when folks walk in and say "oh! no stainless!" They have high quality white appliances that are a step above some of the stainless POS I have seen in some homes, but just because it was stainless, it was viewed as an upgrade.

btw, I chose black. they were on sale, and I got a heckofa deal on them. I was able to upgrade to a better quality appliance set because I didnt pick stainless. I got the side by side fridge with the ice/water on the door with the upgraded filter. bottled right from the door! and a double oven and a sensor microwave with a pot scrubber dishwasher, instead of low end stuff, just to have stainless. I was able to save enough to buy my front loader washer and dryer set!

I just wish I had gas in this house (other than the DH.)

Around my area, you better have granite counter-tops if you want to sell! Oh and a spa tub, hardwoods and the stainless appliances! Well that's great if you can afford it, but if you are looking at houses under 300K... you are not gonna get those upgrades!!

As Erin pointed out... if people do not know how to clean stainless properly, it will stain and scratch and boy does it show!!

As some of you know, I moved into a house this past Jan,09. It was
a fixer upper that I bought., What I could afford.

When I redid the kitchen, I went all around shopping, and decided against
the stainless steel, to much work to keep clean and shineing. I don't need
the extra work.

I chose all white, and it looks great with the color I chose for the walls,
and the color of the new cabinets and floor.

My daughter who was trying to convince me to get stainless, (because she
has them) was very surprised when she visited and saw how beautiful it looks.

I don't care what the trend is, I do what I want and like. I have to live with it. It is horrible how people have to do what is in at the time, just like
clothes.

But, magnets stick to the Stainless just fine, at least to mine. Stainless looks better with wood grain cabinets than white. But, it is just the 'in' thing, it is what my apartment came with. A very old building with the most modern you need.

Boy BTU, am I glad you posted this thread!! DH and I are starting to look into remodeling the kitchen (it's 31 yrs. old and looks it), and I didn't know stainless steel took extra care...and that they were more expensive!
we replaced our dishwasher a couple of years ago, and got black to match our fridge and stove. I think we'll stick with that color when we buy appliances.

I like the Retro appliances they have out now. The stove and fridge that looks like it's from the 50's but it's completely modern. I saw it on The Price Is Right and they were red. So cute! I remember the fridge my parents had in our basement. The kind where the whole door opens and the freezer was a little itty bitty compartment in the top center....just big enough for the old timey metal ice trays!

My neighbor is an architect/designer, he said stainless has been in for over 10years now so will be making an exit shortly and joining harvest gold and avocado (sp?) in the landfill. He said the trade mags are showing other types of metal - rolled steel and copper ($$$) and retro looking stuff.

We redid our kitchen little over a year ago and with the exception of my range all of my appliances are faced with the cabinet doors. I think it looks pretty good, since you can see into the kitchen from the dining and living room it kinda looks furniturey instead of looking into a kitchen.

I did hear that copper is making a huge comeback! They now have those green pans with hard anodized material, but copper! They were gorgeous! Many copper pans cannot be used on glass top stoves, they dont mix somehow. I think copper is so pretty, but I cant imagine the upkeep! it discolors so easily.

I agree stainless is pretty when well cared for, but to keep up to it....nah, not worth it.
