Default ? about gas

Gotcha! OK, my DH and I were having a discussion about his driving habits. He likes to pull out real quick at a stop sign, whatever. Says he doesn't want to wait for traffic to clear because he might be waiting for 40 seconds wasting gas. So he pulls out quickly, emphasis on quickly. So is he using more gas waiting at a stop sign accelerating fast to get into traffic?

some gas saver tips

[# Don't Drive Aggressively
We're not talking road rage here, but the type of driving many people do when they are in a rush. Mashing the accelerator pedal from a stoplight, braking hard and speeding all contribute to a decrease in fuel economy. Give yourself extra time to get to your destination and think "steady and smooth" as you drive. On surface streets, driving at the speed limit will give you mostly green lights, which improves your gas mileage as well as reduces the wear on your brakes. On the highway, the DOE says that every 5 mph you drive over 65 mph represents a 7-percent decrease in fuel economy.]

Pulling out of the starting gate ahead of the pack probably does help. I do it to avoid the constant breaking if you stay in the "pack". Every second spent tapping the brake is wasted energy.

As far as top speed - unless you got a diesel or a wankel - about 62 mph is when you start losing efficiency in an internal combustion engine.

Yes, by mashing the accelorator each time he tried to move from a stopped position he is indeed dumping gas and oil into the engine. More than necessary to get the car in motion. Not only is it bad for your fuel economy, it will also foul up your plugs.

Tell him he is also putting undo strain on the transmission. And the fast speeds mean quicker stopping which means he will be replacing his brakes faster than joe schmoe.

"Quick acceleration and heavy braking can reduce fuel economy by up to 33 percent on the highway and 5 percent around town. New EPA tests account for faster acceleration rates, but vigorous driving can still lower MPG."- fueleconomy.gov

I'm no shade tree mechanic, at least not how I used to be, but I'm pretty certain darting out in traffic/ the fuel needed to propel the vehicle at speed is MUCH more than just a little idling.

But that's just me.

I think my city rates really high for "red light runners."

Getting in front of the pack can get one killed.

Tell him to take a moment to make sure the opposing traffic does not contain a killer automobile. I have been at an intersection to see a car run a stop sign or red light.

As stupid as it sounds, look both ways before crossing the street. As pedestrians, it is a no brainer but often, we do not even consider the possibility of an oncoming car when we are also in a car.
