My Mom got these two last Christmas as a gift. She has a doublke shepards hook that the maintence man where she lives put up for her and filled the regular bird feeder. I guess as soon as he walked away the birds found it and she has a lovely view of al these birds right outside her living room window. My question is is it OK for her to use the other side of the shepards hook to hang the hummingbird feeder? Are the birds compatible oin the same space. I'm sure I'm not asking that right. I guess what I'm asking is whether or not hummingbirds want thier privacy.

I saw a cardinal go after a hummer once. I really have never put them on the same hook. But my feeder is very close to our hummer feeder, which is on a suction cup at the window. And the hummers don't mind. You know they fly very fast...faster than other birds.
I think they all will get along. It may take a little time to get used to the feeder. UpNorth, the little birds flock together. Chickadees, nuthatches, woodpeckers, etc. They all come at the same time. I'd try it... in any event.

I'll be interested in how that works out. We don't have that issue, because we take the regular feeders down before the bears come out of hibernation (per advice of the Dept. of Fish and Wildlife) and don't put up the hummingbird feeders until later (put one up yesterday, just in case)
Those little hummers are mean as snakes to each other. The only thing I've seen them shy away from was a yellow jacket. And then they don't go very far.

I have the same configuration up right now, Doyd. I haven't seen any hummies yet this year but they only seem territorial around one another. They come and go so quickly, they seem focused on their own objective until another hummy dares to approach.
Try it, if the hummies avoid it, she can always change it up. I keep a flowering pot up there with the seeds, everyone seems to get along.

I have always heard not to put them too close together, mainly because the larger birds will make the hummers uncomfortable about using the feeder. My father in law has regular seed feeders and hummer feeders on the same tree branch, but probably 6-8 feet apart, and they do fine with that. It probably depends on how close the two sides of the shepherd's crook are to each other and how desperate the hummers are.
