Default Dream Home

Nope, not getting one. Just thinking. Overheard a conversation between a couple of thirty-somethings, one of those "If-I-won-the-lottery" deals, and they were talking about their dream homes.

Funny, I hadn't realized my concept of a "dream home" had changed so radically. My "dream home" always sat in the middle of 20 acres of woods and fields, perhaps on a small lake, no neighbors in sight. Two stories, a log home, many windows. Lots of square footage, formal dining room, extra bedrooms, hobby room, a small barn for some chickens and miniature donkeys, etc. Huge lawn and garden. Landscaping.

Now I'm focused on one level, accesibility, security, easy maintenance, central air, walk-in showers, a level yard...my how times have changed.

I know just what you mean. I always wanted romantic winding stairs and Scarlett's Tara stairway, with Rhett Butler on it..LOL.

Now I cringe at one stair to climb or the slightest incline/decline on the terre firma.

I was fortunate enough to be able to get all the "accommodations" I need in this house I'm in now. I'm not looking to move into an apartment anymore....it would cost me more in the long run and I'm safe and happy here.

Ultimately, my dream house would be sort of a log cabin type house on alot of acreage out in the country. Lots of animals.....and enough help to tend to it all!

My number one priority would be SAFE. I'm not talkin' bars on the windows, but safe in as many ways as possible.

I lucked out when I got this place. I didnt know I had MS whenI got it. Its a ranch, wide doors, flat yard, big kitchen, and easy to take care of and get around in. At the time we were looking, I almost passed this place up, as it didnt fit with "my" idea of a great home. Nothing else on the market met it with price, location, and so on...so...I bought it and hoped for a house that could be fixed, and turned around. now I see its great. I would change a few things like convert one tub to a whirlpool, and the other to a walk in shower, and so forth, but all in all its not a bad place.

years ago I wanted that multi level huge sprawling place. now I just want something easy to take care of and safe for me to get around in.

I'd like a large ranch on a beach somewhere, probably the caribbean with a sandy beach and a boat dock. I'd like it to be remote enough to have a few farm animals and a large garden for both produce and flowers. I'd also need help tending the animals and cleaning, lol.

I'm happy in the house I have now, but the above would be good if I won a large lottery.

I too always wanted a winding staircase...now I want a ranch with the laundry facilities on the same floor...and a walk in shower with grab bars. Preferably in Hawaii

I'm thinking a nice neighborhood maybe mid-coastal Maine, walking distance to a market, the post office, a church, perhaps a library. Next door to a state trooper.

I'm about to get my dream bathroom (tiled shower, with grab bars everywhere)

The decorator lady and her contractor came today and did some measurements and listened to what we wanted. My mom is getting a closet! She has an old fiberglass shower in her bathroom that we shut off the water to about 5yrs ago when she had her "handicapped" shower built. (her "handicap" shower has issues now that might be getting addressed during my shower remodel) My mom has been using her old fiberglass shower as a place to throw laundry since she had her other shower built.

So, while they're here with a sawz-all cutting my shower insert out down here in the basement we're getting her old shower removed too, and are putting in some cabinets in the space. We're calling it a closet, but really it'll be recessed cabinetry. (someplace to keep her toilet paper, and bath towels)

She's getting new tile in the that area too. (the old shower is in the same area as the toilet is...which is why she's getting cabinets...so she can have doors)

My bathroom is getting floor-to-ceiling-including-the-ceiling tile in the shower, grab bars everywhere, new shower door (cant decide on clear glass, or the opaque) and we're replacing my vinyl floor with tile.

My bedroom is still reeling from having my desk/bookcase built last Xmas, so we're painting my room and getting new carpet there, and if my parents like my paint color and carpet, we're doing the entire house. (I'm doing everything in neutral colors, so they'll probably like it)

I'm already in my sort-of-dream house. It's my favorite one that we've ever lived in. I just had a few bad experiences with my shower in May when I was having that bad flare (kept feeling like I was going to fall down getting in and out of the shower, and the floor gets slick easily)

I just want a safe shower. (and I love remodeling projects!)

I also desperately want new carpeting in this house. It's starting to squick me out. The carpet is/was a white beige color and we've been here almost exactly 8yrs...5 of those years we had a rather large, black, furry dog that left shadows of himself on every thing he rubbed up against. I loved that dog, but he did a number on our walls and carpeting.

I think I'm most excited about the shower and the carpeting. The shower because I think it'll feel safer to me, but I think the carpeting will make the house feel brand new again.

I just dont know whether to go with plush or flat carpet. The decorator's sister has MS, and when she found out I have it too, she started asking me if we should maybe think ahead in some of the updates we're doing. (good idea!) I'm glad I got this decorator. I cant wait till next week so she can show us what's going to be done in the house.

I cant wait to use the new shower! Hope they get this done quick!

Oh, and about my mom's "handicapped" shower. The decorator and her contractor saw that...they agreed with me that it's not a handicap shower. There's a step-up to get in and out...and the contractor said there's an issue with the tile. He doesnt think the people who put it in for us did it correctly. It may be possibly leaking water into the basement, or at least into the basement ceiling (on the unfinished side of the basement) There's mold growing inside the tile grout. The contractor said that it's under the tile, and it's making it's way up thru the grout somehow. (I didnt quite understand how it does that)

I was never really happy with the finished result in my mom's bathroom when that remodel was done. Since watching HGTV all the time, I realize that my dad got a contractor who did the bare minimum, and I'm not even sure these people got permits when they did the work. (hope they did and that it was to code, because if it's not to code, I think the current contractor might HAVE to fix it if he sees something that needs to be fixed)

I know from watching HGTV all the time, that if you dont use the correct stuff under the floor and the on the walls, that the water can get into the inside of the walls and if it meets drywall or wood, it grows mold. So, my mom may possibly be getting an actual handicapped shower...instead of a shower that seems to have handicaps of it's own.
