There seems to be a trend in hollywood lately. Book writing! It seems that everyone is announcing theirs coming out. Nicole Richie, and Jenny McCarthy and several others. Most of their books do nothing more than chronicle their own days, lives, or traumas. Wouldnt it be nice to get MY journal made into a book?

Is it just that easy? it seems that everyone is doing it. Didnt once upon a time it take time, talent, and knowledge to write a book? Now everyone has the book stores covered in "look at me" style stuff.

Yup, it seems everyone is writing a book these days. For what it's worth, it must be easier than before I would say.

I have been working on a book for a couple of years now, and my editor tells me the star power of their name alone is what is selling their book. Had none of them been splashed on the front page of tabloids, no one would even look at their book, let alone buy it. She told me when I am famous I wont have to work hard either. till then...get back to work! *sigh*

I hate when all of them complain about being a star, and then take advantage of being a star. You cant have it both ways sister.

Hello, reading, what a joy. You are right however, everybody and all the brothers uncles are writing books. It sure doesn't mean the books are good. And yes, if you have money, you can publish on your own. I am an avid reader, and I do read the reviews on all books I read. I have the nook, so I am picky too. Read reviews to sort through the reads that are offered, it should help you to decide if it is worth your time. ginnie

I've always loved biographies and especially autobiographies/memoirs. I've read some over the (many) years about people I didn't really know much, if anything, about and they turned out to be wonderful! "The Ditchdigger's Daughters", for example.

But there are some celebrities that I already know way too much about. Eek.

To me, this would be more interesting to read than what some of these celebrities have to write. I like to hear stories from "everyday, ordinary" people. They are far more intriguing and interesting. My neighbor across the street has lived a very colorful life and I love to hear her stories. She has had peaks and valleys throughout her life. These are the kind of stories I would like to read.

But, celebrities want the money and feel they have something huge to say and that since they are celebrities feel control over how people think. I don't want to give them my money. I can go to Starbucks or the grocery store or the library or etc., etc. and listen to stories that are far more fascinating. Just my opinion.

The book deals originate from publishers and agents and not so much from the celebrity him or herself. They churn these things out knowing that most of these well known personalities have a built in fan base who will undoubtably pick up the book. So there is a bit of a guaranteed profit no matter how horrible the book is. Once the deal is signed they hardly care what is written.

A friend of mine (a comedian) is actually trying to write a good book and has gotten no support from the editor and publisher. It is another symptom of the confused publishing industry which is adapting poorly to modern technologies.

Many of them are ghost written too! It is only the name that makes the money in many cases. A recently famous female politician's was totally ghostwritten, with a credit in fact in record time!
Made a pile of $$ too.

Many of the tried and true authors are having ghost writers now, which explains the lack of quality that can been seen in many popular books from many mega authors.

You know the Margaret Truman mysteries? They are typically thought to have had ghost writers.

And Patterson's now have second authors listed finally, but I stopped reading him long ago...as his quality and content deteriorates markedly over the last few years.

(oh and BTW... some studies in the medical arena are ghostwritten too, some without permission using famous doctors...it is becoming quite the scandal now!)

If I could get things organized and if I were able to write coherently, I'd write a book about my dog. I dont think anyone would want to read about him tho. I'm sure he's more interesting than some anorexic rich girl whose biggest claim to fame (other than being rich and a drug addict) is being in a fast food joint's commercial.
