Default Grammar Rocks

Just had a conversation with someone which morphed into a discussion of grammar and the parts of speech. She wondered, "What part of speech is a word such as 'maybe' or 'probably'?" I answered, "Adverb.........I think." So I went to a website for a refresher on parts of speech and discovered a couple of things.

"Maybe" and "Probably" are adverbs. So I was right. "Therefore" (are you ready?) is an adverb that functions as a conjunction. After skimming through the various parts of speech (compound verbs, prepositions, superlative adverbs, etc.) I realized that I have truly forgotten more than I ever knew in the first place.

The Nunnies would crack your fingers with a ruler, if you used improper grammer.

I'm afraid bad grammer runs rampant now among our young.

Yes...and texting is going to be the final death to grammar for young people...they don't stand a chance!

I really LOVED, LOVED, LOVED English and Grammar in school....and I am sad that I have forgotten so much. My kids laugh at me when I tell them that the Ultimate day in high school for me was when I got to diagram a sentence on the chalkboard!!!

I hate reading the textese that people use now. Makes me want to go find a yardstick to whack them with, because the textese just looks so wrong that I need the extra inches of the yard stick to beat them with.

Oh great...Now I have a song stuck in my head...
Conjunction Junction, what's your function?
Too many Saturday mornings in front of the television will do that, I guess.

B2U -- Your last sentence sums up my sentiments exactly!!!

F2U -- We must have some of the same DNA I loved English so much that I wanted to be an English teacher. Diagramming sentences was so much fun!!!

What DO they teach in schools these days?

DD (18) calls herself the Grammar Nazi (I am so proud of her). She is very smart, writes well (at 9 she was noticed by her school).

Both of us have problems with people's use of your/you're. Your is possessive. YOUR book, YOUR toe.

YOU'RE is a contraction. The ' replaces the missing letter a. It is 2 words put together. YOU ARE, take away the A, put in the ' as you combine them = YOU'RE as in YOU'RE here. YOU'RE fine.

my son writes me emails that truly destroy the english language. There are no words.

M ruok? 8 din w/da yday. wth? br8 me for bin l8 ynot. w/ever idk nor du ic whut his prb is.

you get the idea. it took some getting used to for me to understand. he texts everything from his phone, so that tiny keyboard makes you want to short cut. I may not be the best at it, but I miss using real words to talk to people. lol rflmao, j/k.
