I would certainly hope no one tried to use them.

Any pics of folks using them? Or after they used them? Looks painful!

Oh my Lord.. They look like they were made for death defying stunts.

Thanks for the giggle, Josie.

Sadly, but thankfully, no pictures of people actually using these. I think these stem from laws that make public buildings and parks have handicapped access. Some people do a rushed and cheap job just to say that their place has "accessability" when really, unless you are a daredevil, there isn't any access.

There are laws about the measure of angles, etc. My "ramp of Death" is not ADA compliant and has given me some exciting moments but it's nothing like those! Marcstk considers himself the Wheelchair Kamikaze and I call myself the Maryland one (but I also call myself Queen of Maryland) and some of his videos where he must venture out in NY traffic and there's buses and others coming at him make my stomach clench. Wheelchair use is not for sissies if you want to leave the house. Handicapped bathrooms very often have grab bars on left side and that's my totally useless side. No wonder I sneak into men's rooms with DH. (Figure Men would freak out less than women having the opposite sex in their special room.) Also they're often empty more and certainly no line.

I went Xmas shopping (and out for dinner for my sister's b-day) in an area of Omaha called "The Old Market". It's called the Old Market because all the buildings down there are probably circa 1890. No handicap access down there at all. I was still wobble walking from the drunk walk that I had in early december, and using a cane so that I could keep my balance at times and so that people wouldnt look at me like I was drunk.

Went into a couple of stores that as soon as you walk in, there were at least four steps down into the store...a couple you had to climb up steps that were obviously not built by someone who knows how to use a square, a level or even measure correctly. I'd have to stop and rest before trying to walk in and out of a place...oh, and some of those steps, there were no railings to hold onto.

There were a few that had some ramps to get up into the building. Restaurant we went to was a corner building, so they had a ramp that wrapped around the building and wasnt scary. But, the Old Market is really not handicap accessible for most of the stores. (plus, it's kind of scary down there, it didnt used to be seedy, but now after dark, I wouldnt want to be there alone)

Oh yeah...the streets in the Old Market are brick! Ever see someone in a wheelchair try to maneuver a chair over old fashioned streets that are cobbled with Chicago brick?? Yes, it's all very charming and quaint, but I had a friend about 20yrs ago who had post polio...she HATED the Old Market. Place is one big handicap hazard.

I dont know how they get away with no stair rails on most of the store fronts that have steps, or how the fire department even allows some of these places to stay open with all the narrow doorways that open in. (doors should open out so that if there's ever a stampede you dont have a big pileup on the doors) Not all the stores have that, but I just dont understand it.
