As many of you know I've been feeding three little kittens that appeared on my back porch several months ago. They sleep in the barn in the back of my house and come and go as they please.
There are several other strays but they don't stay here like the kittens do. I guess they aren't kittens any longer but they aren't full grown, either. I just caught two of the strays that come by from time to time "wrestling" in the back yard. And I don't mean play fighting. Is it that season already?? What am I going to do when all these kittens are born? I can't catch any of them (the adult cats) and even if I did I can't afford to have them all spayed and neutered. I just feel so helpless. And I know come Spring there's going to be a new community of kittens that need help. Short of closing my blinds and never looking out the window I just don't know what else to do. Sorry for the rant. I wish I could just not care but that's never gonna happen!

Can you call the SPCA and see if they can catch them and spay & neut them?

I've called them.....and everybody else in this county, too. They have no program to pick them up. And even if I took them to the ASPCA office here they have no room. If I left them they would just call Animal Control and we all know what happens there.

A tough spot to be in. I knew eventually you would be faced with something like this. I contributed to a HMO where I used to work where 3 kittens would beg the night guard for food...and so I started donating bags of kibble. Within a year there were over 20 of them coming to the back door!
I know the owner where I got Weezie catches them sometimes and neuters them. And then lets them back out. The owner said here at Mich State Univ Vet school will spay cats brought to them for very small fees...as a learning situation for the students. She offered free spay for her kittens, but I declined, and said I could take care of that for Weezie. Our Tippy who passed recently was from a farm, where a lady caught the pregnant females, raised the litter in her garage, and neutered the mother and released her back after the kittens were adopted out. If you have financial problems, this could be a big problem for you. Perhaps you could ask around at the church you attend to see if any of your members could help you with this? As a financial gift to the community, etc?

It's such a quandry because once they have surgery they really need to be kept inside for a couple of days at least.....and I have no where to keep them. IF I could catch them all.....and that will be virtually impossible.....I'd take them to the vet I take my own cats to. They keep a large cage in the waiting room and always have at least one cat in there waiting to be adopted. Maybe they would take them all! I guess this was more of a "rant" post because I can't help anybody if I can't catch them. I just hate it that there's going to be so many homeless kittens born. Why can't people just spay or neuter their pet if they're going to let them roam around outside?

call a few local vets and ask them if they have anyone that traps cats for spay/nueter programs.
You are a good egg.

Our local Humane society has a very low cost spay/neuter program. I wonder if you contacted your local newspaper and they did a story on the local cat lady if there would be some financial support come in.

I read somewhere -a long time ago -that they put a large fruit pit or stone in the reproductive area of female camels- it works like an IUD.
Too bad they don't improve on this simple & more natural thing for kitties...

No, really, Doydie, that is a great idea but in this economy I really have no business doing this.....but I can't just let them starve. I'm just stuck between a rock and a hard place. I know I just need to do what I can and try not to worry about the rest. I do pray about this daily.

Well, Kelly, maybe that starter kit you ordered wasn't the best idea.
