I have spinal stenosis and my upper left thigh hurts most of the time especially when I sleep. Unfortunately I am a side sleeper. My ? is what are my chances of my health insurance paying a partial part of a new mattress for me. We found some good mattresses that my pain is either minimal or gone but I don't want to pay in excess of $1000 for a double bed mattress only.

I hope they will. It's a toss-up, isn't it? They don't pay for things that seem reasonable, and pay for things that make me scratch my head.
If they WON'T pay for a mattress, might they pay for some kind of foam or egg crate topper?

If you get a prescription its tax deductible, but its truly rare to get an insurance company to pay for it up front. I would call several medical supply places and ask how to do it. GL.

I'm also a side sleeper and sometimes my hip and arms hurt. Got a memory foam mattress topper from Amazon and DH with his bad back likes it too. The mattress is firm (for him, I hated it) and topper is 2 inches thick and so nice. It had a foam smell but within 2 weeks it was totally gone. It was @ $130 for queen size. Now my kids each want one for their dorm beds. Bed is firm underneath, but foam cradles my limbs.

Doydie, if you can hold off on the mattress for a little bit, I would recommend waiting until the next holiday. My fiance is a manager for mattress warehouse and I know during the holiday sales they have some amazing deals. Also if you are looking to upgrade in size the showroom beds are usually a queen size and a lot of times they can sell you the floor models for much less.
Also never agree with the price on the bed. Apparently it is a negotiating trade...who knew? but usually they can go up to 40% off of the ticket price, you just have to haggle. I don't know about the insurance covering it, I do know I cannot get my insurance to cover lidoderm patches but they gladly cover a morphine prescription. Makes no sense.

I have suggested this but DH rejects it. Remember Rob and Laura on the **** Van Dyke Show, they had twin beds and research (for what that's worth) shows sleeping in twin beds improves people's sleep. I admit I like having a sleep partner until the snoring and, um, other noises start and the turning and crowding me to a sliver of the bed and cover and blanket snatching stats. King size beds are like 2 twins. Can you imagine having a twin all to yourself?!I'm really conflicted on this. Maybe we should get a bigger bed with a bigger memory foam topper.

Look, I've been censored. You know who I'm talking about - that chimney sweeper in Mary Poppins. What was his brother's name? He was on some show I saw.

We have a king. I still have to put a body pillow between us to keep my side of the bed protected... sometimes he tries to steal my pillow and I have to pinch him until he rolls back to his side.
Know what's funny? The snoring/ tossing/turning/ leg twitches/ knees coming stright for my broken back/ arms trying to touch me coming from the other side of the bed drive me insane. Yet, for the life of me I cannot sleep when he is not there. It makes no sense. Seperate bathrooms would be a blessing. There are days I wish I had my own bedroom. Then there are days when I know I wake him up at least once an hour from my own tossing and turning and I feel bad. I don't care how much it costs. would give my left arm if I could sleep for 8 hours straight without being drugged and without pain. Hey, a girl can dream right?
