Default Cat Food Recall

Shipments of Nestlé Purina PetCare cat food sold to Oregon, Idaho and Colorado are being recalled: They could be tainted with salmonella.

The recall covers only dry cat food sold under the Cat Chow Naturals label in 6.3 lb. packages and Friskies Grillers Blend brand distributed in 3.15 and 16 lb. packages. The company lists best-by dates and production codes on its website.

The company said the food was sent out by error to the three states in February, 2011 and could have been distributed to other Western states. Cats that eat the food could become ill, showing signs of a decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain. They could also develop bloody diarrhea, fever and vomiting. If your cat has these or other symptoms, take it to a veterinarian.

Salmonella also sickens people who touch the food or infected pets. Symptoms should be treated by a medical professional.

For more info please call 800-982-6559 or visit www.purina.com.

I used to feed my cats science diet till I saw that even science diet was in that huge pet food recall. I switched them to Wellness food. orangic human quality food. expensive but never had a recall. Scary because we have to depend on them to provide quality products that we cant taste if its bad first. Not that salmonella has a taste, but you know what I mean.

Ha Wellness canned does almost smell good enough to taste.

My understanding is that Science Diet is laden with corn, one of the cheapest ingredients on the planet. Irritates the crap out of me that it is considered such a great food.

Wellness is excellent if you can afford to feed it and in most cases for cats even an inexpensive canned food, pate style without gravy/sauce, is better than expensive dry food. I do Innova for my dogs which I think is comparable but also expensive.

I am angry that Jack needed to be on Science diet for his bladder. I researched it with the vet and we found Royal Feline which has much better ingredients. its still prescription and has been working well for him. He misses his wellness food.

Dej, my cats eat the Royal Canin Urinary SO dry food, too. They all seem to love it even though it was originally just for Tigger. It is expensive but if it keeps him from having crystals then it's worth it. He was so miserable back in 2008 when he had his first issues with that. They do make a wet food but none of my cats liked it.

I really wish I had known more about pet foods when I got my first cat of my own more than 20 years ago. I truly believe that a raw food diet is best for cats because that is what they eat naturally. I bought some for my cats a while back. It didn't contain any fillers like garbs such as corn, fruits etc. You would've thought I was trying to poison them when I gave it to them! they're inside cats so they never had a chance to hunt and catch their own meal.

It's a pain in the butt because it isn't available everywhere and it ain't cheap! You can make it at home but that is really hard for someone with limited energy and money. I would've added some cat grass to their diet too but I could never get them even try the food in the first place.

I was thinking about getting a (trouble free), cat, when DDoggy goes to doggy heaven. I won't be able to train a new pup, I know, but after all this, I've learned that cats can be more trouble than dogs and changed my mind.

Cats are most definatly NOT trouble free! There are litter boxes to scoop, hair to brush, teeth to clean, claws to trim (unless you want them to trim them on your couch) and vet bills out the ying yang if they get sick. Just ask Jack! He is one of the sweetest cats I have ever owned, but OMG he has been a boat load of trouble. Injections, medicines, vet visits, watching to see the size of his litter box leavings, comforting him in the fireworks, and so on. I have about 4k into this cat now, and he will need injections for the rest of his life, and that is a big IF we can keep him on the straight and narrow. His food is $45 per bag! and thats not counting the wet stuff. so.. while most cats are easy IMHO this one has not been.

I say get an old shelter puddy who isnt a kitten, and needs someone to cuddle, and has proven his health thru the years. I got my mom a 7y/o and she freaked at his age, but he lasted another 7 and was one well loved puddy. he provided many great cuddles, and snuggles for her. Not a single issue with his health, and he ate the cheapest food on the market.

I will let you have weekend custody of Jack.

Sally, I agree that an older cat - and one that likes being an only cat - is the way to go. Kittens are fun but they are quick and have more energy than all of us put together!

Shelters have an abundance of older cats that would just love to be the main attraction in someones home.
