Went to Borders today. The Kobo e-readers were 30% off (covers for them were 40% off)

So, I bought one. (my dad and I pooled our money. Kobo is mostly mine since I pooled in more money than he did.) We're planning on using the Kobo for library e-book borrowing. I'm kind of hoping that I can get my mom to learn how to use the Kobo, so that she can have an e-reader of her own. (if mom doesnt use it, my dad and I will share it) My dad and I thought that one that has library capability would be good. So a clearanced (but brand new) Kobo sounded like a better deal than a brand new, full priced Kindle for my mom.

So far, it's not bad. I'm still waiting for it to charge up, but I've been playing with it and have added a couple of library books to it to see how difficult it was to transfer a borrowed book to it. (surprisingly easy!)

It's a Kobo Wifi (they had one Kobo Touch left, for $90, which was 30% off whatever their original price was... I almost bought that instead) They had like 50 of the plain Kobo Wifi's tho.

It's supposed to have the same screen as the current Kindle, but I think the Kindle screen has better readability. The Kindle looks sharper to me. The Kobo came pre-loaded with 100 "classics". (basically 100 books that they got from Project Gutenberg...yes, they actually say "Project Gutenberg" on the e-books when you open them)

I'm probably going to go back for another cover tomorrow. One I got, I dont really like, but "all sales are final", so I'm stuck with that one. That cover was $10, so it's not that big a deal. They were having a 40% off sale on the covers, so I'll probably go and see if there's anything a little nicer that doesnt use velcro to hold the Kobo in the cover.

I still have to figure out how to add it to our WiFi. We have a hidden SSID (basically people cant see that our wifi is on if they're using a wifi "sniffer" looking for an open connection. If I cant use the wifi here at home, that's no big deal, since I can transfer books with the computer, or just take the Kobo to Panera or McDonald's and use their internet connections.

I guess I do collect gadgets. My dad has a Kindle 2, I have a Kindle 2, a Kindle 3, an iPad and now the Kobo. I'm all excited that I got the Kobo on a fairly good discount tho. Too bad I'll never see any Nooks discounted, otherwise I'd probably have one of those too. (it's just sad how much I'm addicted to gadgets)

I don't know what an E-reader is but I have Kindle on my I-phone and I love it.

What's really sad is that I just had to go back down to Borders and buy another cover for the Kobo. (hey! they were 40% off! I needed it!) Didnt really care for the generic one-size-fits-some cover of dubious origin that my dad picked out. I decided to get another one that was a bit better of a quality, and also didnt smell like a chemical factory exploded next to it.

My Kindles both have two covers apiece, now the Kobo has two covers. It's a sickness...really. I love buying accessories for my gadgets. The Kobo cover will also fit my Kindle 3.

While I was there, I almost bought a cover for my iPad. (iPad covers are 40% off too) but I had some self control and didnt do it. (wasnt the kind of iPad cover that I like)

I have 1 Kindle 1 cover and so far 20 -99cent mysteries read.. I do not have the urge to dress the Kindle for dinner..

Erin, maybe I shouldn't tell you, but Consumer Reports September 11 issue has reviews of tablets and e-readers!

I want an I-pad and a Nook Color, but I don't need both. I-pad for ease of use and size of the screen. Nook Color because it does more of what I want at a cheaper price, but smaller screen. I have birthday money burning a hole in my pocket!

I want the Nook too...specifically the Nook Color. But, I'm hoping the price will go down. (probably wont. I think the economy will get worse and some serious inflation is going to hit pretty soon and gadgets will become completely unattainable to me)

The Nook Color would be cool, because it'll do basically what my iPad does, but it's smaller and probably easier for tired MS hands to handle. The iPad is heavy compared to the Kindle and the Kobo.

Tonight, I was starting to wonder if I was ever going to get the Kobo to recognize my Wifi set up. Finally got it figured out about a half hour ago. Nice thing about the Kobo, is that I didnt need to put a CC number into it to download a FREE book. (downloaded a book of Robert Burns poetry)

Not sure yet if I'm going to actually buy books from the Kobo store, so I'm not putting any CC numbers into that account until I need to. I'm going to see how useful the Kobo will be for library books.

If I can figure out how to put personal documents into it, I'm going to put an SD card into it and store fan fiction stories I get for free off the internet on it. Have to reformat my SD card and see how it works. That's the other thing I like about it. I can expand the storage from the 1gb (which is half full with the 100 included free books that were pre-loaded on it) up to some yet unknown GB with the SD card. (still trying to figure out what I can do with this thing)

So far, it's a good e-reader. If you cant afford the $114 for the cheapest Kindle, but can swing the $69 for the clearanced Kobo at Borders, I'd probably say go for it. I dont think Kobo's bookstore has the variety that the Kindle bookstore has tho. But, the library access kind of makes up for that (and borrowing library e-books is free)

The Kobo doesnt seem to be as "idiot proof" as the Kindle is. The Kindle pretty much works right out of the box. I had to charge the Kobo for 4 hours and call the Kobo customer service to get it set up.

There's no physical keyboard on the Kobo like the Kindle, which I wasnt sure I liked, but when I had to enter in the passwords and network name to get it on the internet, I really didnt have a problem using the cursor thingie to hunt and peck the letters and numbers. Less actual buttons on the Kobo, so I guess I wont have to worry about wearing out any keyboard keys.

I am sitting here, thinking...what am I going to do with a 3rd e-reader? (fourth if you count my iPad, but I dont really use the iPad as an e-reader) But, I've already read one of my library books and have started on the 2nd. (short stories) That's something that I cant do with my Kindle. I'm going to have to really look at my local library's website and really look for stuff to read, instead of just the books that I already have on my Kindle.

I'm really hoping that I can get my mom to use the Kobo. She needs something to do that will stimulate her mind and keep her active. If I can get her to use the Kobo, she can read library books and keep her brain going.

My dad showed me that issue. I think it said the Nook was better. (I'm biased. I still think the Kindle is the best e-reader)

I'm slowly comin' around to the techo world. I'd really like to have something (Nook, Kindle, ???) to read books on. Both my sons are "gadget" guys....especially oldest DS. He has every gadget made and then some. He's a great go-to person for those of us (ME) who can't understand these things.
