Angry Sr. Citizen Discounts......Not Yet, Please.

So I went into Publix yesterday to get just a couple of things. DS had come over and offered to chauffeur me around.

As I was checking out I noticed the total due came down just a little bit before I swiped my debit card. I asked the cashier why the total came down. She looked at me with all of her 20-year-old charm and said "Wednesday is senior citizen discount day. 5% off!"

Seriously? Not exactly how I wanted to save a whopping $1.63.

I'm cracking up because when we first got married, my husband had a "Gold 55 card" at the local department store. (He's 14 years my senior). So one day he wasn't feeling up to going in the store with me, and I was worried they wouldn't let me use his card.

I had an explanation all ready for the cashier (also about 20), but she never blinked an eye. Grabbed the card, ran it through...never looked at me suspiciously and said "This isn't YOUR card!" I looked 55??? I was 44!!!

That took a lot of chocolate to get over.

I've had that happen! Ross Dress for Less has senior Tuesdays. They give 10% off. I didn't realize the girl had given the discount until I got home and looked at the receipt.

A local thrift store also offers 10% for 55 and up on Tuesdays. The cashiers always ask me... I say nope not yet! They actually check your ID because they have so many that lie to them.

I started getting the AARP mail. Now that bothers me! First time I understand...but every 3 - 6 months they send another one! Not interested...quit reminding me I'm getting old!!

I didn't get asked in my 50s, unless I was using my cane. It's the damn cane and/or walker that ages ya..

It used to make me mad, in my 30s, when I was asked for my ID at the liquor store!!

I guess I shouldn't feel too terribly bad. When I'm out somewhere with DS28 people tend to think we're a couple. It's sort of creepy to me.....I mean, I'm his MOTHER! On more than one occasion a waitress or waiter has made the assumption that I'm his GF. Maybe that's just to get a better tip! He does look older than 28, though. I'd assume he was in his 30's if I didn't already know how old he is.

Isn't that the truth!

I mean really........$1.63 won't even buy a gallon of gas. Or a cup of coffee (at some places). If they're going to insult me by assuming I'm a senior citizen when I'm not then at least make it worth my while!

At least your Publix does a discount! Mine doesn't! When DD did grad school at UGA in Athens, I wasn't asked there either. My hair is white, I look and feel ancient, what more do I need? My AARP card?

When I was in my 50's I didn't like it when people assumed I was senior. But now in my 60's I ask if they have one. Every little bit helps. My son in law always asks if they have a military discount. One of our places we go to eat gives a 30% discount!
