Default Bathrooms

My grandmother's house, my two aunts' and two uncles' house, and our house had one bathroom. When we moved in 1962, we had two bathrooms because our house was formerly two apartments. One bathroom was a former closet.

I always thought having two bathrooms would be such a luxury, and when we added on to our tiny raised ranch a few years ago, we added a half bath. We say we have two bathrooms, but we actually have two sinks and two toilets!

I've watched HGTV and looked at real estate ads for places with three or more bathrooms, and thought, "Why in the world would anybody need more than two bathrooms?!?" My daughter was here on and off for a few days, and now I understand why.

Even though I'm the only br hog, there were a couple of times when both were occupied and I was suddenly wishing for that third bathroom.

If I had four or more people living in the same house, I'd definitely want two and a half baths, at least. How times have changed.

Our house, now here 32 years, has 1.5 bathrooms too. We raised 4 kids here.

Now DH and I are thinking of adding a bathroom with a shower. It will help resale and I need something more accessible...

Not sure if it's worth the $$ though in this economy...

We have a small bathroom and then a tiny master bath. Our resale would be terrible. I watch HGTV also and the bathrooms ore enormous! To those people our hallway bath would even be unacceptable, it's just bath, small vanity, commode and sink with a small linen closet. Our master bath is a small shower, commode and small vanity. But we raised our two girls fine. I remember one house we had when I was growing up that had a downstairs bath. Dad was in heaven! He didn't have to share a bath with 5 kids and a wife in the mornings. We all knew that bath was his. I think having to share a bathroom, phone, TV, etc makes a child learn to comprimise, share, time management.

Our kitchen sure wouldn't match up to HGTV standards either.

Actually, if you could get the work done for a good price and use timeless (not trendy) durable materials, you could probably get a pretty nice return on it.

I've gotten so used to having a bathroom always available to me......I think that's part of my anxiousness when I leave the house.

I totally need a bathroom available for me at all times. That has always been one of the reasons I don't like staying at people's houses. I'd much prefer a hotel with my own bathroom to use as often as I please.

Holly, DH does all our remodeling...he did the whole kitchen last year. Took four months but saved us mucho dinero...
He had remodeled the bathroom in 2001...put in a jacuzi tub, retiled around the shower and the floor and put in a new cabinet & sink. He also made a tri-mirror medicine cabinet and lights years ago...

I'm one lucky gal!!

I only have one bathroom in my house, which was built in 1964.
I bought this house 3yrs ago, I moved to Ky. from NJ to be near my son and waiting for my DD to sell her house so she can move to Ky.

I have remodeled the house to meet my needs. Just got finished doing the bathroom. Took out the bathtub and put in a Shower enclosure the size of the tub with a seat in it and all the safety bars I need to support myself.
I am not worried about the sale of this house and what people feel about that it only has 1 bathroom, because this will be my last house till the good Lord calls me.

It is amazing how years ago, we all got along with 1 bathroom. My DH
was from a family of 15 children, where they only had a OUTHOUSE for years.
That is something I still don't know how they managed. I came from NYC, first was a bath in the hallway, then moved to luxury I felt and had a full bathroom in the apartment LOL!!

HOW THE WORLD HAS CHANGED!!!!!!!!

I know what you mean. When we moved here, it was just pure luck to have a master bath. and a separate tub and walk in shower. But when the ms is definitely affecting those bodily functions we don't like to talk about.... I spend the day in my room and am literally 5 feet from the toilet when I'm working at my desk.

It is truly frightening to try to even go a mile down the road to the dollar general. I really feel blessed though to have this extra bathroom. and if I need to jump in the shower several times a day, then I can and the rest of the house can use the hall bathroom which isn't real large, but it has a full bath shower.

I've often now told my kids that if they are lucky enough to get to build a house, they really should have one bathroom that is completely handicapped assessible. We don't think about stuff like that when we are young. But you never know what your future holds.
