Default Retirement

TGIF! Sitting in my office and listening to the Muppet's Christmas album. Today is the last day of the fall semester. Then I have finals to give and grade on Monday and Tuesday. I officially submitted my notarized application for retirement at the end of Spring semester this morning.

I am so jealous! I thought I could retire in 5 years. Than I looked into it and found out I have to work 8 more years before I can retire. I started working when I was 15. I have worked too long. I am sitting at my desk today trying to motivate myself to do my work with no success. I envy you.

I am taking an early retirement and with early retirement comes a penalty. I am turning 55 in a few weeks. But I have been teaching college students for 29 years, including three years when I was in grad school. I am ready to graduate!

Good for you! I pray that I am smart enough to retire while I am still feeling decent.

They (the government) needs to stop. It is not as if you have hit retirement age and only worked 2 years. You've been teaching for 29 years and you deserve a break. By the time I hit 55 I'll have worked 30+years and still not be elgible for full retirement. In the military you only need to be in 20 years and then retire. I have a brother that never saw a day of combat or anything close to it except war games and he retired at 38.

You should not face a penalty or anyone who has put in the years. What happened to the days when you worked 25 or 30 years and was elgible to retire penalty free?
