For years I've slept in the recliner a night or two a week, now most nights. And for YEARS the TV has been on as I sorted out my blankets and pillows and got comfy. Sometimes I'd watch a little while, then shut it off and go to sleep.
Sometimes I'd doze off, wake up later, then shut it off. And nights when I was really anxious and jittery, I'd turn it to something "gentle", lower the volume, and leave it on all night. That got more and more frequent. Well, something happened, I don't know what. All of a sudden, about maybe four or five months ago, I quit cold turkey. Just didn't want it on. After my husband goes to bed, I just shut it off. I have no idea what's different. I mean, that was a 20-odd year routine, and I don't miss it one bit. He asked me why I didn't have the TV on at night anymore, and I had no answer for him *shrug*

My husband got me in that habit maybe 10 years ago and like you a few months ago I just started turning it off.
In my case my sleep time has been really limited and I didn't want to take a chance on being disturbed when I have so few hours but every once in a while if I don't have to get up early I will put on the sleep timer for 90 minutes which is enough time for me to fall asleep. I kind of like the white noise of having it on very low and would bet that when my schedule settles down a bit I might go back to having it on all night. Haven't noticed any reduction in my electric bill, fwiw.

I do the 90 minute timer on my tv too. Been doing that for at least ten years now.
I need the white noise because I have tinnitus, my ears ringing will keep me awake all the time, a lot more than the sound of the tv.

I used to turn it off when DH was here, but now it's on 24/7. Having it on low helps me go to sleep. If it wakes me and I turn it off, in about 10 min. I have to turn it back on, or I can't get back to sleep.
Sometimes, if I am anxious at the obnoxious sounds, i turn off the sound and read the captions, until I fall asleep. I think I sleep longer without the sound.

I love my sound machine on white noise. In fact I also have a fan on high speed and my C-Pap! Needless to say I don't sleep in the same room as my husband. When we are at my daughters house or in a motel room I need the extra noise just to drown out his snoring.
We are going to a hotel in a couple of weeks while we are at my daughters house. I sleep on the couch and he sleeps on a twin size mattress on the floor. The couch is to short and the mattress is to soft. So we are paying $65 to stay in a hotel for one night!

if I can hear the tv I can't sleep. it keeps me my sympathetic nervous system active (fight or flight).
But I do love my white noise machine on the 'rainstorm' setting. it help me shift into parasympathetic system (rest and digest) for a deeper more restorative sleep. MS is a constant 'attack' on the nervous system so every little bit helps... my dogs snore is so relaxing, unlike my hubbys that drives me nuts!! |

I have a time limit that I must turn it off by. I can easily slip into the routine of watching till the wee hours of the morning, and then before you know it I missed out on what would have been good sleep. Then I can go past the sleepy feeling and turn into a wide awake TV watching machine. Even for shows I have seen before, I am as interested as if I just found it for the first time.
11pm is my limit time. if its still on, i must force myself to shut it down, and I find that normally helps me nod off pretty quickly after. Some nights im ready earlier, and some nights its a hard task to turn it off, but i know without sleep, im doomed. My mom sleeps with it blaring. I have no idea how she can do that unless she takes a load of pills and no longer connects to this earth.

My wife used to do fall asleep with the tv on. She stopped a few years ago ~ 50 yo.
I never fall asleep with the tv on. I occasionally pass out with the tv on, but only in the fall during football season... On Saturday nights... Tom |

I always have the TV on. Very low, though, so I can barely hear it. DH used to sleep with it on but it was always way too loud for me. Guess I just got used to it because I don't remember ever turning it down or off.
