I have been n Metformin for probably 5 years or so to as the doctor said'to curb my desire for carbohydrates'. Well that didn't work. My blood sugars have been in the low 110's. I have had one at 133. Becuase of the Metformin every doctor I go see says I am a diabetic So when I had my physical I pinned him down. Am I or aren't I. I felt like if he said yes then I would be more serious about weight loss and a better more balanced diet. I think he reluctanly said yes sinse I have had the one in the diabetic range, the others were in the pre-diabetic range. So today I went in for my evaulatioin conference. They gave me a meter, I am to check my sugar every day but at different times each day. When a spot comes open in a class I will join that. So for now I am just watching carbs. Big life style change for me. Until I get used to this I am keeping a food diary.
My meals used to consist of a diet orange sunkist with about 4 ounces of orange juice in the morning. I would nurse that drink since it was in a big insulated contianer until 5 when we went out to eat. The only thing I watched was red meat. Then at bedtime I would have a diet sprite and a bag of popcorn. .so life will be different now

Doydie...hugs for the challenge...and kudos for opening your eyes to the danger of continuing as you were.
I have 4 different breakfasts each week-oatmeal with blueberries, one egg, high fiber cereal, or a slice of whole wheat toast with coffee every morning. I love soup so I have soup almost daily for lunch with a half turkey sandwich. I am trying to have yogurt or an apple for a snack. Dinner usually consists of a protein-chicken fish or beef-with a salad, an orange starch like baked sweet potato or squash, sometimes Brown rice or pasta that's while grain, and/or a veggie. I've been slicing up peppers & eating them as a snack too with a small bit of dip. It's been difficult to stay away from chocolate, and occasionally I have some, but I feel better when eating better. Still not losing much weight, but I try to exercise or at least walk daily. My family was overweight, smoked, and sedentary. My parents and sister all had heart attacks in their 40s & 50s...they are all gone now... I decided I am going to take care of myself for me and fir those who love me. I don't always follow my plan 100% but I am making myself accountable fir my choices. I pray that you can stay string and calm as you walk this new leg of your life's journey...

Metformin can really cause low B12 levels. I think you should be tested ASAP and fix anything below a level of 400.
Don't accept "normal", as lab ranges are outdated in US and report down to 180 as "normal"... Low B12 is very very damaging to the nervous system. We have many discussions on the diabetes forum. There is even one explaining the different types of meters. Some use different testing chemical systems and can give false highs if you consume other "sugars" than glucose. Like mannitol, etc. It is not a very busy forum and you can see all sorts of questions and situations etc. You are very lucky that the metformin is not making you sick. Many people can't take it. However, you should be having kidney tests every 6mos or so, as my doctor required that, because metformin can affect the kidneys. Do you know your A1C level? That is important, and sometimes MORE important for determining your sugars over a 3 month period.

Thanks for the suggestions. peppers? Yech!!!!! But if you like them then it's fine for you. I tried a veggie omelet last night. It was OK and I realize I am going to have to try new new things. But peppers give me terrible heartburn.
My AiC was 5.4%. I have been told that anything below 6% was good. My fasting blood sugar this morning was 91. That is what is baffling me so much about this diagnosis. But that 91 is the first normal one in several years. I am going to try to keep a log of what I eat and then put the calories and carbs count beside it so I can see what is good and what isn't.

5.4 is good for your age. And that is WITH metformin? I bet it would be a whole point higher without it.
So just make some changes. Protein with each meal. Avoid sugar as much as possible, and only have moderate amounts of carbs. Doesn't look alarming yet. But do keep an eye on your B12, because metformin wrecks it.
