I have been training an intern for the last 2 weeks on how to write a progress note. She is a very slow learner and even though she has a template to work from could not remember what to include. I spent 4 solid hours today teaching her step by step how to complete the note. Finally after 4 attempts she got it right!
I get no reward for working with her. My boss is actually her preceptor and gets all the credit. I do it only as a pay back for all the people who helped me and mentored me along the way. I am exhaused now. I am done. I can do no more. |

Be proud of what you did. You need no one else's acknowledgement

I love precepting if the person is bright and engaged...not so much when they aren't.
Hang in there and know that you did the right thing not only to pay back the assistance you received when you were new but also in consideration for the patients this person will be caring for in the future.

She did it!
Last night she came to see me 10 minutes before quitting time to tell me she was working on an assessment and "got lost" and could not finish it. I told her to take all her notes, etc home and figure out how she got lost and what she should do. Then, this morning I thought that maybe she was having a problem with the computer program rather than the note content so I told her to write the note and forget the computer for now. She was gone about 25 minutes and then sent me a message there was note for my review. I read it and it was perfect! I almost jumped out of my chair I was so excited. I ran to the office she was in and hugged her. I was just ready to tell my boss she was not working out. I am so glad I gave her another chance. She is justifiably proud of herself today. I feel pretty good too. |
