Default Genetically modified foods

I don't know if the verdict is still out on genetically modified foods and the effect on the human body.....but

I listened to a talk show the other day where the people were really saying how bad it is for you. I ordered a DVD to check it out but haven't rec'd it yet. Genetic Roulette : The Gamble of Our Lives by Jeffrey M. Smith

So with that in mind they said sugar beets were genetically modified for sugar. So just in case....I'm buying my sugar made from sugar cane.
(Also they said don't buy Walmart corn on the cob....its Monsanto corn meaning lots of chemicals aka Round-up)

Any thoughts?

I have come to the conclusion that we no longer eat food, just food like products. Nothings real anymore. Additives here, preservitives there. Unless you grow it and or kill it yourself, you cant trust whats in it. Thats a pretty sad fact

I just don't see how something genetically modified could possibly not have some long term health complications for those that eat it.

I am guessing that you would be hard pressed to find any crop from any farmer except organic farmers where roundup is not used for weed prevention. It's not just Walmart?

Country here, and we will start seeing the people on the traffic circle in town and the flea market soon selling their er... home grown corn from the back of a pickup. Hmmm... home grown in a month? The farmers here are just planting their fields?

Knee high by the 4th of July? Maybe they are spreading a special type of BS?

I've had to stop obsessing over what I eat. It's just me that I cook (using that term loosely) for now and I can't get to the grocery or farmers market for organic things......like I could afford them if I was able to get there.

I try to eat healthy things. Even if they aren't organic I figure veggies and fruit have to be better for me than processed things.

As long as I can feed my pets and have enough to feed the outside animals that depend on me for food I figure I'm doing good!

I depend on Schwans and Lean Couisine dinners to be
healthy and fresh. If they aren't, then I'm gonna die
anyway..

We've got a local farmer's market that will begin soon. The local farmers - mostly organic farms - have booths there every weekend. You can really tell the foods that are organically grown. They look much different than the pretty ones in the grocery store. I guess they look like they're supposed to look.

http://www.lawrencevillefarmersmarket.com/

There is a program here you can sign up for where they bring you a small, medium or large box full of in season, locally grown organic fruits and veggies. You take what's in season. No choices. It's expensive and I'm not sure I like everything that might be in the box. Plus, some of the vegetables need to be cooked and sometimes I just can't do that. It's a good way for folks to try things they wouldn't ordinarily try.

We also have locally raised grass fed beef farmers. You have to buy alot and freeze it. It's good for families. But, again, it's expensive.

I figure I've made it this far trying to eat somewhat healthy........I can make it another 30 or 40 years.

It is Farmer's Market season I do my best to try to get to one, at least once during the summer. There is also a local farmer, that sells fresh corn and fresh floral bunches. ((I like the $5 bunches of sunflowers and gladiolas, and whatever else they have grown for the season))

Default You asked for my thoughts...

I live in Iowa, where 13.7 million acres of corn were grown in 2011. I see corn fields from my house. I literally cannot drive to a grocery or even the closest convenience store without seeing a Monsanto sign in a corn field. If farmers are using the same kind of RoundUp I use to kill thistle and other weeds in my yard, they are in more trouble than we are.

At this stage in my life of 53 years, if I get cancer or grow a second head there's way more to blame it on than genetic developments in food.

I appreciate your concern, Karilann , but I got way more to be concerned about!

ETA: There's a bag of Walmart corn on the cob and a bag of Walmart loose corn in my freezer right now. As prettier as the brand name food is, I just cannot afford to always buy the best.

P.S. - why do you suppose the Green Giant is green? Nuclear waste?!
