Default Do Dogs Get Sick?

I have a mixed breed Shar Pei that will sneeze alot when she gets excited. She snorts and stuff....its very cute

However, Last night I noticed she is sneezing more, seems to have a runny nose, and maybe even runny eyes. I was wondering if they can get a common cold? Can they get the same colds as humans? Since I was sick recently, could she have gotten one from me?

Thanks

Yes, dogs and cats can catch to common cold and it affects them the same way it affects us.

My mother was one who didn't believe in Vets and would self perscibe meds to both our cats and dogs. i.e. baby aspirin, Vicks Vaporub, you get the idea. They never seemed any worse for the ware and all recovered. What can I say?

But today I would suggest that you call your vet and get his advice on how to treat your pup.

Yes, your pets can get sick. It's rare or almost impossible for a human common cold/virus to be able to transfer to an animal or vise versa. There are other conditions that can. It's usually what our pets bring in from the outside thats the problem.

The sneezing might be from his/her hair/whiskers that are in close proximity to his/her nose. Trimming the area will reduce this. I find it cute too so I don't trim too close on my dog.

If your pet does have an infection, it's immune system will fight it off, just like ours does, and just like humans, if it persists for more than a week or so it's recomended to see a vet.

Pets can have allergies too, just like us. You might want to consider having your carpets cleaned, especially around this time of year...if you live in a cold climate then you've been locked inside now for several months. *Yeah Spring...it's coming*

Here's a question. If humans can be allergic to a dog or a cat....how come we never hear of an animal being allergic to us?

FYI, dogs "shiver" when in pain.

Anywhoo...my two cents.

Hope all works out well.

Maybe we just don't test them for human allergies.

Ho boy.... my one pup can give himself the runs because he has MAJOR anxiety. His separation anxity just about drives me batty and he whines when he is nervous, which happens often. Good boy, great with dogs, cats, kids, and other people, but don't leave him by himself without crating him or you end up with destroyed doors and window jambs.

Can you say "doggy psych drugs"? Sure, I knew you could.....

If she's sneezing and has the drippy eyes, it's probably an allergy.

If she's listless, feels extremely warm, and doesnt want to eat, take her to the vet.

I used to have a poodle that would get tonsilitis a couple of times a year (strangely enough, I was getting tonsilitis around the same times the dog was) I knew he was really sick one day when all he wanted to do was sleep, felt like rag doll when we would pick him up and he wasnt eating at all. He was nearly comatose. (really knew he was sick when he didnt want to rip my sister's arm off when she sat down next to me and started to pick on me)

Took him to the vet, got him some antibiotics and a jar of peanut butter and he started feeling better within a week. (the peanut butter was to put the abx's into...with my last dog, we bought canned store brand dog food and made him meatballs)

OOOHHHH! Poor doggie! I guess I figured it out then She definately has a cold and I'll watch her in case she needs the vet. She is still eating and running around so I'm not worried. Do they make doggie tissues?

I'll also vaccume the house real good....just in case, as with five animals in the house, hair can get every where in a matter of days. Just to be sure

Thanks everyone!!!
PS: I missed the animal forum...I'll have to check that out

I love dogs. They're one of the best things on the planet (next to chocolate) My dog Tiny was a drama queen. He was always getting into trouble, and when he got sick, he was a pathetic pile of fur. He'd have to get rubbed, or his ears scratched and petted when he didnt feel good. But, the big dogs are usually huge babies about stuff. It's the little dogs that are tough guys.

I'll have to look at the animal forum too, even tho I'm currently dog-less. (unless you count my Webkinz chihuahua)

you can get very sick from your pets. cats can carry the strep virus and pass it to you. if you ever have it going round and round the family.....get your cat checked.
