Default ? what are dreadlocks

One of the contestants on American Idol has them. I thought it was their own hair, just grown out and didn't know how they got into the configuration that it is in. But he said that one of his 'dreads' fell out while he was on a date. So are they hair extensions of some kind?

No Dear...laughing here.

It's uncombed, chunks of hair that form into a snake. You section off chunks of hair and back comb them ( remember teasing your hair? ) until they stay like that. Then you never comb it again. They can indeed fall off when the hair near the scalp breaks off until there is nothing left holding the dread to the head.

see this site for more information on real and fake dreads. www.dreadheadhq.com/

AND.....

they stay wet so long sometimes that they can get moldy before they dry. EEeeeeeewwww...... Just what I don't want is MOLD in my hair!! I have a couple of cowlicks and they're bad enough to deal with.

There was a skinny white guy who used to come into the bar where I bartended for a while years ago and he had dreads. Being curious about them, I asked about how you formed them, how you cared for them, what it was like to have them. He was great--told me lots about them. But he said he had do use a mold retardant on them because of the drying length time.

Some people add crud to their hair to help it snare up too. Yuck. I got a hair wrap one time - loved it, but eventually it fell out just like a dred.

I like the way they look, but the process to getting there just seems a little gross. I freak out if I can't wash my hair every day.

Dreadlocks aside, that boy is soooo.... sweet and such a great singer. I hope he does well in the long run.

The things you learn here. Seriously who'd have thought dreads would ever come up.

I used to work with a guy who had dreadlocks. We couldn't figure out what smelled so bad in the office until one day we discovered that when he went to lunch the bad smell left, too. One of the girls walked up behind him while he was on the phone and took a whiff - then gave us all the thumbs up that it was HIS HAIR!!! Ewwwwww! That's the grossest thing I have ever come into contact with on another human! **I don't get out much...**

Ok so last night I wasn't sleepy and I was bored so I checked out the dreadlock site. I'll admit I've seen some really nice looking guys (and women) with dreads but......after I read through the site and saw what all is involved I've decided to never again complain about my stick straight hair. Sorry but when it comes to talking about bugs and mold in hair I have to wonder....why?????lol
