In Remembrance

In 1907, Anna M. Jarvis (1864-1948), a Philadelphia schoolteacher, began a movement to set up a national Mother's Day in honor of her mother, Ann Maria Reeves Jarvis. She solicited the help of hundreds of legislators and prominent businessmen to create a special day to honor mothers.
The first Mother's Day observance was a church service honoring Anna's mother. Anna handed out her mother's favorite flowers, the white incarnations, on the occasion as they represent sweetness, purity, and patience. Anna's hard work finally paid off in the year 1914, when President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed the second Sunday in May as a national holiday in honor of mothers. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ My favorite Mother's Day was my very first one, when DD was born. They brought me a Rose and a Turkey/Dressing dinner, in the recovery room. DH promptly ate it. ![]() What is your favorite Mother's Day and why? It could be for you or for Your Mother.

Thank you for posting that Sally. Mum's Day was in March where I come from, so I wonder what the roots of it are in GB? My Favorite memory of Mum's Day was going to visit with my Aunt and Uncle who had a HOUSE out in the country. It took us almost 3 hours to get there, but it was the first time I rode a horse, and my Mum and I were able to ride side by side. I think I was seven or eight. It was a beautiful ride, and I believe I have pictures of that day somewhere. I ought to look for them. Thank you, and have a LOVELY MOTHER'S DAY, SALLY!!

Quote:
The early Christians celebrated the Mother's festival on the fourth Sunday of Lent to honor Mary, the mother of Christ. Interestingly, later on a religious order stretched the holiday to include all mothers, and named it as the Mothering Sunday. The English colonists settled in America discontinued the tradition of Mothering Sunday because of lack of time. In 1872 Julia Ward Howe organized a day for mothers dedicated to peace. It is a landmark in the history of Mother's Day.

When I was growing up we always had a cookout on Mother's Day and the whole family came over. We had a big backyard and our driveway wrapped around the house and went all the way down to a big patio.
We always made homemade peach ice cream (the peaches came from my Aunt's farm in SC). My Dad bar-b-qued chicken on the grill and we sat outside from sunup to sundown it seemed. We had a neighbor who loved my Dad's chicken so he would always come over to say "hi" right about time we were eating!! It was OK - we liked him! We had an old picnic table that was HUGE - I don't think they make them that big anymore. It always had patches of resin on it so we had to put newspapers before we sat down. My Dad had to have a badmittin (sp?) net up and we always picked straws to see who would get to play first. It's funny the things we remember.....
