Unhappy Pacemaker Problems---I Can't Believe It

I did my first computerized pacemaker check from home last Thursday. It was my 3 month check after the replacement surgery I had in March. It was so easy and I was so thrilled about how fast it went.

My Cardiologists nurse called me at 7:00 this evening and said there was a problem with one of the leads. The lead wires are connected to the pacemaker and feed the power to the heart to regulate the heartbeat. It not only surprised me to get a call that late in the evening but I have to go in Friday morning to be checked by the Medronics tech and the doctor.

Apparently the top lead wire is not functioning properly. The top chamber of my first pacemaker went out and that is why I had to have it replaced in March. They checked the lead wire and it was working just fine at the time of my surgery.

I can't tell you all how bummed out I am about this news. I don't know if they will have to do another surgery to remove the top lead wire from my heart and replace it. I just know there is something wrong with the wire embedded in my heart. I guess I will find out Friday morning what the new plan is going to be.

OMG, I just cringe at the thought of another surgery in that still tender area. I am not a happy person right now.

Well, crap. Sorry, Becky, that really had to be a hard blow. I'll be praying along with the others.

Sheesh, Becky, I'm sorry.. I sure hope it's an easy fix, without having to operate.

Saying some extra prayers for you...

You know I am praying hard that it's OK bff! You went through so much this past surgery. I just hate to hear this.

Maybe it's just something screwy in the transmission.

Thanks all of you for your good wishes. I appreciate it so much.

The new pacemaker I have records all heart activity for 3 months. When I did the home monitor last week, it showed every beat and arrythmia. It's like a computer and it reads the info from my chest and transmits it to the doctor. It's not a glitch or an one time thing.

It is showing that the top lead wire is malfunctioning. Jessie, the nurse, said it could be loose or worn. They won't know until they test it.

The lead wires I have are from my original pacemaker that was implanted in 1996. They were tested before my new pacemaker was implanted 3 months ago and tested fine so they were not replaced.

I won't know what they will do until Friday morning but it has to be checked ASAP. I'm really glad to have that monitor that is so thorough to catch this so fast before I get into trouble. It's scary.

I feel pretty sure that they will have to replace it and that means another surgery. I hope not but the problem is not the pacemaker because the report showed it was working fine. If it needs adjusting, they can do that with a machine but it's fine. The leads feed to signals to the heart and if they are worn out or loose, they have to be fixed internally.

I will be fine and deal with whatever I have to deal with. I'm just so ready for things to calm down.

I will keep you posted and appreciate your thoughts and prayers. You are all such great friends and great support.

Bechy, Just read this thread. I know my friend's father had to have his wires repaced after so many years of being on his pacemanker, and it was considred minor surgery. He had to stay over one night, but he has problems because he is also diabetic. My thoughts and prayers will be with you now through your appointment.
