Default any interior designers in here?

We are tired of the white walls of our house and want to paint. Our house is decorated in "country" style. we like muted colors and don't know what colors to choose. I am opening it up to my friends here.

I have four rooms I am focusing on. Much of our house is one big "great" room consisting of a living room, dining room and Kitchen. Much like that of a loft in the city. the other room is our master bedroom, and lastly my office/den/study. Any ideas? my favorite color is ORANGE but Laura is dead set against it. lol. I think she may allow a muted orange for the den/office/study.

I'm more of a home remodeler - but I have redone our home many times, walls paint, everything.

I can see how all that white would get boring after awhile..
But yes, I would stick with soft muted natural type tones.

I did a quick search and found this info on the behr website about colors, meaning, responses, warm tones vs cool tones, etc.
http://www.behr.com/behrx/inspiration/emotional_8.jsp

always go with a lighter tone in general because darker will tend to close the room in.
or if you want a bold just do one wall to start and see how you like it.

Hey Earl,

I am not great with colors but just a thought. On HGTV.com they have that section called Rate my Space where you can go in and see what other homeowners have doe in their spaces. Maybe you can get some inspriration by paging through some of the real life pics there.

An article on the top three country paint colors

These American Country Paint colors are perfect for the kitchen, a living room, or even the bedroom. If you love the American country style of decorating, but have had a little trouble picking out great paint colors, then these should help to get you started.

Here is a look at 3 easy to decorate with American Country Paint colors:

http://www.associatedcontent.com/art...ors.html?cat=6

looking at the rooms....

For the bedroom I think a celery green might be nice. Or a very nice light sky blue. Light enough that its neutral and light. You want the bedrom to be soothing and happy when you walk in. Both those colors are cooling.

In the living room, maybe more of a grey green would be nice and add color but again keep it neutral.

I totally think you could totally do a orange in the office....its a tough color so it s needs to be the right shade. I would go lighter and muted and warm it up with some medium to dark wood tones in the furniture.

Also you have some sloped ceilings. Sometimes if you carry the color to the ceiling it makes the rooms look larger.

I love the color of the beams right now in the living room. Beautiful.

Another thought for the living room or the bedroom is a very nice light sand color...very zen and soothing.

Some other thoughts....whatever the color for the living room on the wall to the right in the pic, extend it through to the kitchen for a uniform look. And then you maybe able to leave the other wall in the living room white or another complimentary color. Like the idea of an accent wall.

God I watch way too much HGTV

You could try to paint the walls that are protruding and the one's that are inset a different color with the flat walls a contrasting color Earl and Laura. I see some columns that stick out and areas that go in like in back of your entertainment center. My living room and kitchen are built the same. I would leave the vaulted ceilings in white to keep the feel of height.

I am thinking of painting the lower half of my living room a darker color and the upper a lighter color (I have a chair rail dividing the walls). Then in the kitchen I am thinking about painting the walls the darker color all over with the soffits in the lighter color or visa versa to give it separation.

Hope that makes sense! Good luck and have fun. I always feel like we are living in a new house when we paint. lol

What a delightful Area. I can see different shades of orange and green to brighten up that living area.

My reply disappeared, whilst Jo played around.., so....all I said was that I love your Home, Earl and that I can see shades of orange and green brightening up your living area.

I will add that, Jo is right...go light not dark.

OOPS...I see that Jo saw the error of her ways...Thanks, Dahlink..

Eeeesh, all these buttons - I'm glad there wasn't a bunch of replies yet LOL.

Just glad I usually have 2 browser tabs open when I do this stuff - just in case something goes weird - I still have the old stuff on the second window/tab
