i have handicapped plates but used a placard in my previous car.
it can be moved from car to car.

i use it if a friend picks me up to go somewhere.

it's handy for that.

Ok, I'm happy that you all know about these things. My mom has been insisting that she can ONLY use that placard in MY car. My dad has been wanting to use it in his car since he prefers his car (an automatic...my car is stick)

Tonight, we went to join a local fitness center. The Judo academy that my dad used to work out at is located there now...he's finally gotten into good enough shape to get back into Judo again. So, we were checking out the fitness center to see if we wanted a family membership. (they've got 2 pools and about 4 hot tubs...I wont use the hot tubs, but, they have TWO pools!)

We took my dad's car, and it was so much easier to park up close for my mom with her placard. Went to get something to eat after, and the hostess at the restaurant was confused because we werent in my car. She usually sees my car and immediately gets a table ready for us. Showing up in a different car confused her.

and the best part, is that I wont ever have to go fishing behind my glove compartment for the placard when my mom loses it.

When I go with a church group out of town I always take along my placard so the church van can use it. With our family though I think we all have placards!!!!! My sis has fibromyalgia and numerous ortho problems and has a license plate and placard. I have a license plate and placard and my Mom has her placard she takes when she goes out with friends.

We only have my mom's placard, and only use it when she's in the car with us. I'm sure my dad could get a placard of his own, since he does have a heart condition (which could be getting better, since he's back into exercising again and lost a bunch of weight)

I dont see the point for getting one for me yet, and am hoping I wont ever have to have a handicapped placard for myself. There are times when I just drop my mom off at the door of a store and then I go park (out in the boonies a bit to save the paint job on my car from the insane people who dont give a carp if they ram the carts into other people's cars)

I'll do that just because I want to do the little walk from my car into the store. I'm actually doing that more now, since I started to feel better recently, schlepping myself thru the parking lot actually feels good to me now. (gosh, I hope that lasts!)

I am glad that my mom's been wrong about how it's used for a few years now. I thought it was weird that she thought you could only use it for one car. I'm thinking the wording that it's "not transferrable" confused her. I had to tell her several times tonight that it means you cant transfer it to another person...but that it was perfectly ok to use it in other cars. She still doesnt quite get it I think, since everytime we parked somewhere tonight, she'd say "I hope we dont get a ticket!".

The placards are assigned to people, not vehicles;) I hope you enjoy the new found freedom of the traveling placard!

I have a car with a plate, and was surprised when the DMV clerk handed me 2 placards. I said, "um, you gave me a pate, why the placards?" She said "In case you need to travel in a vehicle other than your own. maybe you need a ride to the Dr. or shopping, you wont have to make a friend drive your car to get you up close. She said the plates are for the car, the placards travel WITH the person."

Did you know, in MOST states, if you are displaying your placard, OR have a license plate that is handicapped, you DONT have to feed the parking meters? Vetrans plates are the same way in most states. I didnt believe my friend when she told me, so I stopped the meter maid and asked her. Its TRUE! So, no more having to fly back out and try to get to the meter in time to feed it. its FREE Parking!

Yep, in Arizona also, no paying for meters in down town with the placard. I rarely go down town but like that when I do.

What irritates me about the darn placards is, that you have to renew them every 3 or 4? years. Mine is expired, until I get to the Docs and have him fill out and sign the renewal thingy and send it out.. I don't drive anymore but I still have to get to the Docs and such..:mad:

In Michigan for free parking at meters or parking garages we need a free parking sticker. To qualify:

My placard is in my purse at all times. It's especially critical since I don't have a car of my own, yet.

When I go with my sister, she has a huge pickup (business vehicle) and she squeezes in the handicapped spots. She once carried a 8'x10' rug into JCP that she was returning, right from the handicapped spot. I hobbled behind her in my walking cast. It was a comical sight.

My dad got one before his hip surgery and keeps his in the car. If I'm driving his car, I use his placard. Remember mine is in my purse. Just because it is more accessable.
