I have drilled wells everywhere in the Houston area and have never not found water in the top 25 feet.
Yeah - lousy soil conditions here. We hit sand strata at work at about 15'. Gotta go down at least 70' with piers, even for something as simple as a cooling tower. I'm getting geotech borings done this week for a new structure - I'm guessing I'll have to go down 90' with my piers.

The guy who dug our well 10 years ago was griping how he used to go down to the first aquifer, then the city made him go down to the second, and then they made him go down to the third...

We had to go down 125' for our well and we were lucky. Our neighbors only went down 70' and ran dry after 8 years. The aquifer is doing ok for now and we still have plenty of water. Not bad for living in the desert. The big aquifer we live over is at 400'. Hopefully we won't have to drill another well.

Consider yourself lucky. After we had our house built, we could NOT find a decent well. The first hole was about 900 feet. Dry! The running joke was that we were the luckiest people around. We dug a 900 foot post-hole and didn't have to fill it! We ended up with several holes that started out good, but went dry after a short time. When we finally hit a good well, we decided it was a sign from God that it was time to move. We moved to Oregon and never looked back. Oregon has more water than NM, anyway.

gee, and we all complain around here about hitting water so soon. When I tried to dig up my yard for a young tree we hit water at about 2' (yes, two feet)

Water water everywhere, and nary a drop to drink

Vic

You will definitely appreciate this as your informative thread came to good use today!

I started a new landscape job today and we are building a Koi Pond that I designed. The guys are digging the pond and it has to be 3.5 feet deep. The dimensions of the pond are approximately 11x8, so it's not small!

They're digging and digging and digging, and finally one of them says something about digging a hole to China! My ears perk up and says, well, as a matter of fact, No, you wouldn't end up in China! If you kept on digging you'd end up somewhere in the Indian Ocean a bit southeast of Madagascar.

One of them looked at me rather puzzled and said oh, then if we keep digging, we won't need to fill the pond with water!

Always a clown in the group!

Under my house? A fault line that is overdue for a large earthquake....

Maybe we can give him a shovel, he can start digging. When he gets close he can swim to meet her!

(maybe I've been out in the sun too long today!)
