I just finished off a prescription of an oral medication. I was looking at the insert that the pharmacy gives you when you pick up the meds.
I was not pleased to see this at the bottom of the page. This *Medication* should not be taken by anyone who:
Whiskey Tango Foxtrot!?!?! No wonder my toes are tingly, and I feel sick again. (I was doing so much better after getting rid of the infection in my mouth when I had some fillings replaced) It also says: What are the side effects? The most serious side effects from *Medication Name* are seizures and tingling or numbness in the extremities (arms, legs, hands, and feet). If you experience these symptons, stop taking *Medication Name* and call your doctor immediately. What the heck?!?! Do these doctors not double check all their stuff when they Rx meds? The doctor who Rx-ed the med was a "doc in a box" doctor at the Urgent Care. He was kind of arrogant, and abrupt. When I went to my regular doctor's office today and met the new Physician's Assistant, I told her that the doctor who Rx-ed it was rude. The Urgent Care is in their office after hours, she asked me who Rx-ed it to me. I told her, and she said "yeah, he's a good doctor, but his bedside manner needs work". Gosh, I hope the "side effect" of making me numb and tingly isnt a permanent thing. No wonder I'm not feeling all that good tonight. And the half life of the med (an antibiotic) is 24 hours...so I guess I'm stuck with the numbness (if it's not permanent) till at least Sunday. I wonder if this is why my eyes have been really light sensitive the past week too?

I'm sorry for your life lesson. It sounds like no fun at all. I never take a med without reading the info first. I hope now that you've finished it the sx will resolve shortly. Take care. 's

Whew! Called the pharmacy. The pharmacist told me that the numbness and tinglies is probably NOT permanent. (her computer couldnt tell her for sure or not tho)
I asked her to put a notation in my account information that I cant take that abx because it's specifically states not to give it to a person with an active neurological disorder. I just took the last one about 5 minutes before I got bored and started to play around with Google. Great. Now I get to sit here and wonder when the numbness will go away.

I found this webpage that talks about Quinilone antibiotics (things like Cipro)
http://www.fqresearch.org/cohen_2005.htm It talks about the possibilities of tendon rupture, something I already knew about Quinilones, but it also has a small amount of information about the nerve injuries that it can cause. (said that it could take years to recover from some of the nerve injuries, or they can clear up quickly) I wouldnt just up and stop taking the quinilones if you're taking any, but question your doctors about it and see if what they suggest. I'm going to be calling my doctor's office on monday to add Quinilone based antibiotics to medications that I'm sensitive to. (I'm also allergic to Penicillins...great. I better not get any more infections!)

Sorry you had that nasty surprise. Hope it goes away once the med is out of your system.
I check out all my drugs prior to taking them. Both with the pamphlet and online at the companies info page. I do the online thing because it I found that if there are any updates to side effects, etc. - it seems to hit there first. Or if one of the side effects is a really bad one, you see it emphasized big time. Hope you feel better soon.

Why wouldn't the pharmacy have picked up on this, Erin?
I go to the same pharmacy, and deal only with the owner. He's the same guy that fills my rx's, and goes over each new med with me in person. He knows what I am allergic to, and he knows what contradicts with MS and LDN. I do pay a little more ($1 or $2) for each med, because he is just a "ma & pa" operation (not like Walmart), but it's well worth it. Cherie

Hey Erin,
While I don't have MS I do have some other neuro/autoimmune issues. Same thing happened to me wsa rx'ed Cipro and after 3-4 days got numbness and tingling. I stopped it immediately because I knew it could cause it and it went away after 36 hours or so. And all has been fine since. I took it for a bad respiratory infection. that I had to tell the doc that it probably was not right for me after reading up on it. |

The warning about Cipro and MS have been out there for quite some time. I have warned about it here myself. I believe that Sandy's DH has used Cipro with no poblems and we discussed it here at NT. It doesn't always happen, but often enough to keep PwMS away from it...IMO..
Sorry, Erin. I hope the sx go away soon..

It had that specific warning that people with a neurological condition should NOT take it. If it's that specific of a warning, they should have at least warned me. The pharmacists that I get my Rx's from know about the MS. But it's always busy when I go in there to pick up stuff. I think the doctors should have at least known...or at least they should be required to look in their cheat books to check med warnings before they Rx stuff. My left hand is tingly and the fingertips are numb, and my toes feel big this morning. I hope the pharmacist was right that it will go away. I was reading something last night about how nerve damage from antibiotics doesnt always go away. But that was referring to long term treatment...so hopefully tomorrow or later this week the tingly, numb stuff will resolve and I'll be back where I was before taking that antibiotic. The half life of the antibiotic I took was 24 hours, so around midnight tonight that will pass.
