Default Poor little one....

I was out in my backyard today and found on the sidewalk by my garage a beautiful dead ruby-throated hummingbird. How sad.

When I moved here, I was thrilled to have these beautiful birds around. The first time I saw one in my yard it was playing in my sprinkler, flying in and out amongst the droplets of water. I was transfixed.

Today, as I moved the little body into the vegetation by the garage, I wondered how it had come that this beautiful little bird had died in my yard. I'll probably never know, but I do hope that there are more of them around next year. Maybe I'll even put up a feeder for them since I love to see them.

Poor little one.....

You can tell a lot about a person by their reaction to the loss of such a tiny being. Many people would not have even noticed his passing.

I would bet he'd simply lived out his life - they don't live too long, you know. And they are uber tough. I've seen them crash into the house at mach five and shake it off. Yep, old age probably got him.

More will come - if you feed 'em, a whole lot more will come.

I hope it was old age. He wasn't near the window and usually if a bird crashes into a window (which I hate), they end up right below the window.

A former professor of mine did a study on birds flying into windows. It's a huge problem. http://www.wildlifeprotection.net/ev...lertbirds.html

He was an interesting guy, an ornithologist. Enjoyed the heck out of his class too.

Brain, you have loads of them. I remember watching them at your feeder.

When I saw my first hummingbird I was driving down the highway and there was one that was darting across the lane of traffic like a little airplane in terrible wind shears. It was so cool. Kind of like spotting your first Bald Eagle.

I didn't realize that hummingbirds migrated for the winter, but after looking them up yesterday found that out.

Awww, bless it's little heart. I just hate it when things like that happen but I know it's just the cycle of life. Still though, it makes me sad.

I found a little sparrow once under a tree. Didn't have any injuries - just laying there in the leaves. I got a tiny little box and put him in there with some cotton balls and buried him in the backyard where it was shady and the ground was easy to dig in. Everytime I walked by that area I thought about that little sparrow. Such a tiny little creature but it just made me so sad to think that he had to die alone.

Thanks for taking the time to care about your little winged friend!
