Default Home Soda fountain?

Ok, with all the talk about coffee makers, I got to thinking. What about Soda?

My DW and I drink WAY too much soda. I prefer Coke, DW likes both diet coke and Dr. Pepper.

We found a soda fountain at a state faire years ago and I am trying to find something like it now. It sits on the counter top and you just add the syrup, water and it makes any cola for you. Anyone heard of it?

it (claimed) to save money over buying bottles or cans of soda.

All I found online (so far) is the really expensive commercial ones for thousands.

WHY? Why on earth would you want to have live CO2 on your kitchen counter where your stove and oven are its neighbors?

I once worked for a company that tried to sell home soda making equipment. The biggest cost to the consumer was buying the CO2 because of all the transportation regs. It may be different now, but we tried all the "tastes like x brand" and it was a crock of carp.

It would be less risky to just buy the store brand sodas or Faygo to save money, I don't think you'll be even a little pleased the first time you blow a batch and have to clean it up. We didn't like doing it in the conference room.

I had a neighbor with one a few years ago. He spoke to a package store owner and got help in finding it. I guess you could also do an Ebay type thing.

The home made versions are better for you with NO high fructose corn syrup, and you can make different flavors. If you are going to drink soda, that is the way to do it.

I laid down my soda can years ago. it was a hard habit to break.
