Were you named for anyone? Does your name hold any special meaning for you or someone in your family? Were there other names that were "tossed around" before you were named what you were?
My oldest sister named me....she was 16 when I was born. My mother wanted to name me after one of her sisters (and the choices were not good ). One was Telatha Almeda and the other was Henrietta (I cannot recall the middle name). So....my sister stepped in and asked if she could name me. And the name she picked was Kelly Anne. And I was called by both names until I entered 6th grade and begged my Mom to drop the Anne. Now...I kinda like it and wished I had kept it. Now, everyone knows me by just "Kelly" or "Kell".

Well, my parents were naming me Angelique. the nurses insisted to
my parents that my eyes were black and that I couldnt be called Angel and have black eyes My parents named me Therese after the saint. When I was 18 I legally changed my name to my nickname. Its a good thing because I was never an angel or a saint. cool idea for a thread Kelly.

LOL here goes.
Well my mom and dad married young......something about cooking...a bun in the oven or something like that. So they had very little money and lived in Buffalo NY in what people would call the projects. So they wanted to name me Lisa but my mom thought Lisa was a rich girl's name and well they weren't rich. So they named me Shelley after the hot dog and kielbasa plant down the street from the projects. Hard to live that name down in my town. Go Figure. Just call me Hot Dog! I'm LOVING this thread, can't wait to read everything to come. Hope the guys weigh in, too.
I was originally supposed to be named for my dad's Aunt Carrie, on whose birthday I was supposed to hatch. (I was a day late, go figure) I would have been Carrie Laura. At the last minute or so, my parents worried that the other side of the family might be hurt (they wouldn't have) so I got gypped out of Aunt Carrie's name. My mother was Ruth Margaret (Margaret being Mom's grandmother) and so I was named Margaret Ruth. If someone said "Hey Margaret", I wouldn't think they meant me. From the beginning it was "Let's name her Margaret and call her Peggy." People call me Peg, as people will, but I never ever call myself that. My high school English teacher called me Maggie and I liked it, but it never stuck. Too late now. Little tots can't pronounce it, and tend to call me Piggy. The pastor's kids a while back were taught to call all the grown-up ladies Miss so-and-so, and the little one called me (you guessed it) Miss Piggy. (Hey, Miss P is one of moi's favorites) I always said I would name my kids something and CALL them that. I answer the phone at work, "This is Peggy", and the person says, "Uh, may I speak with Margaret please?" Then I say, "Speaking." and the person says "Uh......" But I don't say "This is Margaret" because I don't call myself that. Aren't you glad you asked, Kelly Anne?

I was born William michael zell, found this out when i was about 18, was adopted and they felt with my new last name of williams, William williams or aka BILLY WILLIAMS, one of the best outfielders for the cubs would of been a sad name to have so they changed it to frank, and not to be too frank about or it or appear to be frankly speaking I would of enjoy being called billy williams, he was one of my childhood heros,

You guys are funny! Kelly this is a great thread.
Typical Catholic family here . . .I was born on St. Joseph's day and my dad thought Josephine would be a great name for me. My mom, thank goodness, decided that since St. Patrick's day was a couple of days before I was born and my due date, they would name me Patricia after St. Patrick. However, I have always, always been called Tricia or Trish by everyone. It's funny, I was talking with a friend of mine the other day about my name. We laughed as I was never a Pat or Patty or anything like that. It doesn't fit my personality either. I used to hate it when people called me Patricia, Pat, or Patty. In fact, I still do but I gently and kindly tell people that my name is Tricia or Trish. LOL BTW - All 10 of us kids have been named after saints and Sox, I wasn't a saint either. lol |

Hey billy then....billy williams...
Well lets see, not sure why they picked my name..Sarah Louise... but when they had me, there was a nurse that was in right after my mom gave birth to me, the nurse asked...AHH what did you name your baby girl...my mom said Sarah and the nurse...(terrible nurse) said...OH, I dont like the name Sarah ahhh awful.... can you imagine.... when I was little though my oldest sister, Madeline...(one dying of cancer) she was 10 when I was born...she was like my second mommy....when I was a toddler she was trying to teach me to say my name...and I would say RAROO....instead of Sarah... so to this day, Madeline has always called me her little Raroo..... Now my baby girl, my youngest is named Maria Madeline...Maria after my mother in law..and Madeline of course after my sister...neat thing is...we didnt know if boy or girl was coming... but both girl name sakes showed up at hospital when I was being induced, and madeline was there for the delivery....when they both showed up...(MIL flew in without me knowing) I said YES we are having another girl...both name sakes are here.... Madeline my sister, her middle name is Marie.....so kindof sweet that our baby girl is Maria Madeline....we ahve always called her Maddie....after my sis...hugssss,sarah |

Every child in our family was named by our parents using their Russian heritage as a guide. They did make one mistake in that they name one of my siblings a guy's mane, but it is a name that is accepted normally as a girls name.
"Victor" is from Wiktor. Now our last name was butchered at Ellis Island befor ethe Russian Revolution, and it lost five letters. Likewise, my great grandmother changed here name before she left Russia in order to avoid detention by the authorities in Russia. If they knew who she was, I would not be here. -Vic |
