Default People in Houston Can Hardly Wait...

...to ride for us. The BP MS 150 from Houston to Austin is over 6 months away (April 2009), but registration for the ride opened today at 10:15am, and in the first 2 hours of registration, over 8000 people have signed up to ride. They will only allow 13000 people to ride (for logistics and safety reasons), so the ride may fill up in less than 5 hours...and it is STILL 6 months before the ride! Simply amazing to me... The fundraising goal for the overall ride is $17,000,000 and they already have nearly $100,000. Pretty humbling...

Yep. It will be my first time riding this one. I have hesitated in the past because it is more uphill riding and is longer (a total of close to 180 miles). With the San Antonio to Corpus route going away next year, I decided I would ride Houston to Austin next year instead. I am going to try to lose about 40 pounds between now and then to make the uphills alot easier on me. We will see how it goes... I may end up riding a tandem with my wife instead of both of us riding alone.

Registration is closed. We've been hitting 13000 registrants the first day for a few years now. Used to take 2 days...

That is amazing! The TX chapters do a really impressive job.
My BF was working in Houston all last year and I'm down there almost once a month and we are both impressed with the ride and the excitement it generates there. I would love to see the organizers work with the other chapters to help them develop such successful rides or walks.

BF rides in the pathetic ride they have here (few riders, no sponsors, no advertising, ugly route from nowhere to nowhere. - I was the only person out cheering the riders past two years) and he has been on the steering comittee trying to help them work to increase participation, but they aren't interested (little ego problem). We are plotting to stage a coupe and overthow the leadership here.
