just for ania:

One lovely summer day in 1948, a Swiss amateur-mountaineer and inventor decided to take his dog for a nature hike. The man and his faithful companion both returned home covered with burrs, the plant seed-sacs that cling to animal fur in order to travel to fertile new planting grounds. The man neglected his matted dog, and with a burning curiosity ran to his microscope and inspected one of the many burrs stuck to his pants. He saw all the small hooks that enabled the seed-bearing burr to cling so viciously to the tiny loops in the fabric of his pants. George de Mestral raised his head from the microscope and smiled thinking, "I will design a unique, two-sided fastener, one side with stiff hooks like the burrs and the other side with soft loops like the fabric of my pants. I will call my invention 'velcro' a combination of the word velour and crochet. It will rival the zipper in its ability to fasten."

Mestral's idea met with resistance and even laughter, but the inventor 'stuck' by his invention. Together with a weaver from a textile plant in France, Mestal perfected his hook and loop fastener. By trial and error, he realized that nylon when sewn under infrared light, formed tough hooks for the burr side of the fastener. This finished the design, patented in 1955. The inventor formed Velcro Industries to manufacture his invention. Mestral was selling over sixty million yards of Velcro per year. Today it is a multi-million dollar industry.

Not bad for an invention based on Mother Nature.

Legzz, how little did we know as kids, when returning home from hiking in the "gully" and finding our socks COVERED with tiny seeds, which we named VELCO BURRS... and here, we were *right* all along!

oh, and Velcro-closure shoes are the BEST thing since unsliced bread.

great for toddlers who haven't learned to tie laces yet, and are constantly tripping over danglers...

and for ME, a grown-up toddler, who has difficulty managing laces with numb hands.

HOORAY FOR VELCRO !!

legozzalot, wonderful velcro facts!

'velcro' a combination of the word velour and crochet...I particular like to learn the root form of words.

LavandulaCanadensis, oh, MY! your right 111 posts...111 velcro sticky things!

This is no coincidence!

(see all it took was a good velcro mayan thread to get me outta MIA)

Default velcro has already saved my life many times over the last 2 winters...

because it is the 2nd most important part among three of this footwear apparel i have to wear underneath my boots on a regular basis in Snow Country when each heavy snowfall is followed by freezing rain:
1. the metal tracks, heavy duty ones...
2. the velcro straps, very handy with my arthritic hands...
3. both attached to a rubber sole that goes underneath my boots...
Velcro and those silly Mayans.-icers-jpg

You can always depend on Moose to work our minds...and make us laugh.
I can remember in the '80s I read a lot of Cayce...he predicted that the world would have a catastrophe in...oh my gosh, I forgot when...anyway, it's already passed.
Another worry I had was the polar shift that was going to take place. It's presumably taken place 6 times already...that's why they have found mammoths in frozen places with undigested flowers that grow in temperate climates, it's been said. And scientists have been reporting that the earth is indeed wobbling on it's axis.
So if we are suddenly in a sunny, warm zone one day, I guess I could get used to it...except that I have problems with heat
