Um, Kitty, I do my own online but based on income I don't have to pay anything doing them online or in person. I just go through the IRS site links to get to them done free. There is also a local service that does them for free for low income/disabled people.

Also, I really don't have to file at all. Last year I did because of the stimulus package.

How do you know if you're required to file or not? Is it based on income? I know I'll have to file for 2008 because I had income from my employer during the year. 2009, though, I won't have anything but disability income.

I wish they'd just do away with income tax. It's such a headache.

Mine are too complicated with all the corporate stuff so I have the accountant do them. I probably could do them but why suffer needlessly? DH does his. We have to file separately to take advantage of all our deductions.

Ds had always done ours, 1040ez, and in 2005 he screwed up, left something off and by time they found it we owed IRS 5,000 with it going up 100.00 daily until it was paid! From now on H&R block has our business! Was a nightmare!

I've used TaxAct online for years but mine is a very basic return - I just answer the questions and they complete both forms for me. I have disability and my pension - costs $14.95.

I have used Turbo Tax for probably at LEAST 10 years and I swear by it. For me, it is worth every penny to pay for the program because it is so much cheaper and then I e-file and have my refund direct deposited. After filing, you check back to see if your return has been received and it gives you a date the deposit will be in your account - it is usually about 10 days.

You can go through the IRS website to use it for free if you are below a certain income. I did that for my SIL last year because she qualified. It is their Free File section and I think you can pick from different programs to use like Turbo Tax among others. It says to check back after 1/16/09 to see if you qualify to use Free File.

Mine are quite simple now, but I'm a retired burnt out Accountant, so, for about 10 bucks, TaxAct does 'em.

We have an accountant do ours because of deductions, 401s, etc.
