Hi MrsW.

There are some pretty cool sexy canes out there.

Give you something to smack them with, if they laugh again.

Personally I would call and make the first move. Let them know how you felt but that it is a very real part of your life. Maybe say that if it doesn't bother them that much that you would still like to be invited, but would appreciate a little more tact in the way they handled it. But that's just my two cents worth and the way my family would have handled it.

I don't think you owe anyone an apology, but I don't think you should give up going out to family dinners, events, etc either..My family will react in one of two ways..Either they'll laugh and joke about it with me, or they'll run to my aid and ask a million times if I'm OK..I love 'em all no matter how they react, but I gotta tell ya, the "mothering" types drive me a lot crazier than the jokesters..I carry a cane with me all the time, and use it when I feel the need. It also helps if people wanna laugh a little TOO much. I just ask them if they REALLY want to pick on a person with a big stick. Hope it all works out for you!

My dad fell at a family gathering, he doesn't have MS, but other health conditions.
Many of us rushed to see if he was Ok and as soon as we were sure he was, then we kind of had some nervous laughs of relief.

His was like slow motion- going down to the floor.
He thinks got light headed from looking up and outside thru the screen door for too long.

If you are falling a lot it might be time for an assistance device, much better than ending up with something broken.

sorry your feelings got hurt, I think they all owe you a big apology, you fell they laughed, that happens some times, its ok we all giggle, but it hurt your feelings they knew this by your words and your departure, that is when they all should of said they were sorry, to allow you to leave feeling like you did was wrong of them and not in tune with being a good host

Joellelee2000 - Thank You.
Mrs. Woody,

Thank you for saying that. Now ask Woody if he is ashamed or embarrassed or looks down on me for using my walker. Seems to me, more people will be looking down on HIM if he's perpetually taking headers.

Have his sisters give me a call, I'll teach them what is and is not funny.

My Family would have been laughing their heads off, while picking me up and dusting me off. I would have smacked them all.

this really makes me mad for you.
it's not a laughing matter.
you should apologize for nothing.

i agree with the need for an assistive device to help with balance.

maybe you need to have a firm talk with your family members. how would they feel had the tables been reversed?
